WTB: Howto: Organizing stacks of CD-R's

How do you organize CD-R's? I bought a few of these cases with a lid and plastic 'sleeve', but they waste too much space. Most of my CD-R's are on spindles or just piles somewhere. Anyone got any suggestions? =)
 
I have some smaller CD binders/wallets and I'm not fond of them because the CD-R's get scuffed up pulling them in and out of the sleeve/holder. I use them for CD-R's not frequently used.

The Disc "Selector" Series from Disc Gear (currently down for some reason) kick ass. I received two 50-CD units for Christmas and they're the shiznit. Not very portable or compact, of course, so this would be for your home or office. They're available in 50-CD and 100-CD versions.

What's neat about them is they're indexed by number and features a pop-out CD Index Card that you can print out. You then slide the little CD Selector to the corresponding #, press the bar, and the correct CD is automatically indexed/pulled for you (provided that you indexed them correctly). Kinda like a Rolodex for CDs.
 
Just buy a bunch of binders. One binder can be for games, one for software, one for porn, one for movies, etc.

RaynorWolfcastle he means none of that i bet. Thats just a waste of cds and a waste of hard drive space. Its useless in my opinion.
 
You use the bozo sort method. You throw the cd-rs into the air and randomly pick them up and see if they're sorted the way you want or not. If they are, then you stop, if not, do it again.
 
Personally, I like the spindle method. It's a little more difficult to find things as fast as I could if they were in a binder, but it's much easier to add a new CD to the mix. Just find where it belongs and put it in the spindle, rather than finding where it goes and then moving everything else around to make room for it. That's assuming you keep them in alphabetical order. If not, get a binder or six.
 
I use binders. I have one for software utilities, one for OS stuff etc. Games are in jewel case racks on my computer desk. Then I have stacks of old driver CD's on one side of my monitor and I have a stack of bundled games and shareware on the other side. I guess they aren't organized at all...
 
The low tech, ubercheap method: tyvek sleeves (pennies each, bought in bulk) and some 12 x 11 x 5 Amazon.com boxes. Discs organized in double rows, separated by cardboard cut from the shipping box the sleeves came in.

Simple, effective, scalable. 🙂
 
It's been online a few hours and there are lots of good ideas. I really appreciate it, as it's not easy to find these things unless you pass them by on happenstance.

The Discgear looks really cool and space-efficient, but at $70/100-case it's quite the luxury. Especially considering 100 CD-R's only cost $5 nowadays. 😉 It also worries me that they're not stackable.

The large CD box]http://www.4goldenbridge.com/larcdstorbox.html[/L][/L] is what I have one of now, except mine is only a 50-count. It's really useful, but I found that my 50-count takes up about the same space as 50-cd cases.

I really like the Amazon.com box idea. It's cheap, it's effective... but it's not made of plastic, and that's disappointing. Also not stackable. ^_^

Anything with sleeves, including CD binders, I tend to avoid. They're generally pretty big and the 'sleeve' always turns brown or ugly after 5-ish years. I suppose it depends on the quality of the brand, but I haven't had great luck with them.

I found this website which sells an expandable, stackable solution but uses sleeves.

I guess what I'm saying is I want something stackable, generally meaning square. It has to be compact, like something inside a 'Bag of Holding' or something that stores its contents on another plane of dimension when it's not in use. It has to be solid, long lasting, and pretty so that my girlfriend doesn't think I'm a geek. Oh, and it has to be cheap. Super cheap. Free would be good, but I've got a Lincoln in my pocket waiting to get out.

Given my current information, I'd probably stick with a spindle-Amazonbox combination until I could save up enough money for those rad-looking DiscGear-100's. The problem is that I'd have to save about $1.40 per disc to afford the DiscGear's. I burn discs in my Cendyne 40X at about 3-minutes per disc, meaning 20 discs per hour, meaning $28 per hour. Ouch. My only hope is that these cheap 'free' CD-R's will decay at a rate that makes my ability to afford such luxuries plausable (some of my CD-R's from 1998 are already curdling).

At officemax i bought a 208 cd-wallet for only $17.49 plus tax instantly. So i was able to buy two for the price of one!
 
I use cases and (believe it or not) Girl Guide cookie boxes, the big boxes of 20 little boxes. (Both younger sisters are Guide/Ranger/whatever's.) Everything's alphabetized, and easy to shuttle around thanks to handles. Awesome idea. 😀

I gave up on CD-cases when I realized my desks CD-case space was finite 😉

You need the ultimate binder: Case Logic Koskin 264cd wallet

My opinion on binders: Case Logic PWNZ YUO, Fellows is ok (just got a 128 binder of theirs), the 48disc "cd projects" binder I got from futurecrap sucks a big fat one.

yeah i wish i knew about their 264 when i started to buy mine 🙁

I originally thought 208 was their largest capacity, but now i have to keep buying 208's to keep up with the uniformity of my collection 😉
