WTB hard drives that don't suck

Seagate 500 GB got the whiney bearing noise today. 1.5 years old. WD and Seagate 320's same thing. WD Blue 640 headed in that direction. WD 1TB Black that vibrates the windows in the house two doors down and seek noise that sets off Richter scales in Cuba. Samsung F3 500 GB that didn't take to cloning at all and crapped itself silly after a week. Had to reformat in Linux which was the strangest thing ever. It's working fine now though...from a fresh install.

Newegg needs a service that sends out a new drive every 3 months.

Seagate of old was good. but Maxtor bought them and that means a no no as far as getting Seagate since maxtor builds them now. Maxtors break down and the Seagate ones will break down.. Most reliable are low capacity WDC drives that are protected and secure can live a long life just look at this

You have that backwards - Seagate bought maxtor, primarily for their IP I believe (maxtor was better at something compared to seagate, i forgot what, it was something like random writes or random reads, I could spend 10 minutes searching xbitlabs for the article but won't).

Seagates are fine, though their 5900 RPM drives are known to be less reliable.

WD/Samsung/Segate are all fine. Hard drive brand loyalty is primarily driven by luck I feel.

To the OP: perhaps your PSU is sending voltage spikes which is killing off your hardware, something to consider as you seem to have a lot of issues. I've never had a hard drive die, but my old maxtor did start to get some bad sectors (prompt RMA).

PSU's are fine. Drives are online 24/7 and see a lot of use. I haven't had a drive die on me per se, but I quit using them for main duty when they start to whine. Every Maxtor I have owned got the whine.

These whiney drives are probably good for more years of service, but I don't trust them and the whine just annoys the heck out of me.

Well, to ease up on the whine you could get a green drive like the Caviar Green series or the EcoGreen f3 from Samsung. All drives get louder with use. Eventually they will crap out. I think you've had a piece of bad luck the last few times around.

Both my WD and Maxtors of 5+ years ago started whining after just weeks, but still work. Every SATA drive I've had (some up to 3.5 years old) does not.

For noisy seeking/reads/writes, try AAM (auto acoustic management). It does miracles. I had a 250GB Maxtor drive that sounded like a keyboard at 200wpm when it was active and now I can barely hear it.

FWIW (nothing much haha) I am 0/1 for hard drives at newegg. Their packaging is pretty dubious at best. For other components, no problem. I buy local for hard drives.

Both my WD Greens sometimes emit a buzz noise when between a fully idle and active state. It's really annoying so I actually keep them active to prevent it from happening. I'm very happy with my nearly 3 year old 7200.11 despite the horrible experiences many people report.

I thought that only ball-bearing drives started to while, whilst FDB drives didn't.

Stop buying consumer level drives. Buy a few WD or Seagate enterprise drives and see how that works out.

I love my Samsungs. Quietest drives bar none. It seems like you've already found that with your Samsung F3 500GB, cloning issue notwithstanding. WD Blacks are great but they are NOT quiet. WD Blues are ok in the sound department, but at this point there's no reason to get one over a faster Samsung. Seagates are garbage. They are the only drives I've actually had fail.

User error?

There is NOTHING that makes an F3 different to other drives for cloning software.
What are you using to clone?

If you are unhappy with the consumer level drives the answer is simple.

Spend twice as much for the enterprise level drives.

Refusing to even consider you might have done something wrong only makes me think its more likely something you did or failed to do.

Your thought patterns are so elementary. Elementary as in third grade. It's kind of neat to have people like you on these forums, if only to show that you are millions of years behind normal people and that your DNA are a few hundred thousand twists closer to swinging from a branch than my own DNA.

Sure enough IDC will be here to redact my text in big bold letters to make up for in cyberspace for what he lacks IRL.

Mod callout and personal attack in one. Both are unacceptable.

And we all know that IDC like things BIG and BLACK.

Nobody knows what your problem with IDC is, but it had better be over.

Allrightythen...

Has anyone else had trouble imaging the Samsung drives? I'm about to buy my GF an F3, and will be tasked with moving her OS from her current drive. I have never had trouble (that wasn't my fault) with Macrium Reflect, and am now wondering what to expect.

Yes, the harsh words probably weren't necessary...

I imaged my Samsung 500GB F3 off my old 150GB raptor running Vista, and I had no problems. I used Acronis True Image 2010 (the demo version, which was free).

What does anything here in this thread have to do with me and why are you making personal attacks on me?

Do I even know you? "Tsavo" doesn't ring any bells. Did I do something to you?

We try to offer suggestion and what we get are attacks?
Your F3 drives are haunted, that is why they refuse to clone.....

Answering FishAks question of cloning the F3s, I have use Acronis true image 2009 and 2010, Paragon drive backup SE 8, Avanquest Perfect Image pro 12 (paragon engine 9), Ghost 14, Ghost 15, and for cryiong out load, ancient Norton Ghost 2003 (DOS based).

No issues at all.

Alex
PS. Ghost 2003 is still top in my book, but that belongs to another thread.

western digital blue is what they put in hp low end machines (RE4 in low end servers) - they have been solid. honestly i've had like 1 or 2 drives die in business class hp machines in the past 6 years. most of the time at about 4 years i upgrade the drives to a newer faster one ; or if sata an X25-V.

That's on 24x7 no powerdown(i am a noc guy - keep those puppies spinning always)
