WTB a used AT&T phone

I have a pretty basic MOTO Razor cell phone that my employer provides for me, but I want to get something a bit more advanced and easier to text with.

If I buy a used AT&T phone, do I need to get it activated/unlocked? Can I just put my sim-chip in it? I'm not sure how this all works.

If it is a branded AT&T phone you just put your sim card in and you are good to go. If it is branded to some other network it will have to be unlocked so it will work on the AT&T network.

I don't know if this will work. You may need a 3g sim card and an iPhone plan to be on AT&T with it.
