Forgot where I read it but aside from the Verizon iPhone rumors, there's one floating around about an iPhone with a larger screen which is the separate iPhone model hinted at by Engadget.

A) of course an 5th gen iphone is in the works
B) *yawn* on yet-another-iphone-to-verizon-rumor. It will be true when its announced. Until then, no matter who the source is, its a worthless rumor not worth discussing further.

This is at least the 2nd time I've seen reference to a Jan 2011 VZW iPhone launch. I would not be shocked if this one actually pans out.

Here we go again. :p

Tell me when I can get a Desire HD with US 3G bands, thanks.

Or a 4.3in device, with a sufficiently fast, cutting edge SoC, lots of storage, solid capacitive touch screen, with an open boot loader and none of that eFuse-like crap.

apple needs to come out with different models. one of the reasons android is doing so well is that they have something for everyone--fast/slow, small/ large screen, cheap/expensive etc.... apple needs to come out with a home (current version), premium (large screen, more memory) and ultimate (faster chip, big screen, keyboard) editions of iphone. they could take advantage of the apple cachet and charge $1000 for the ultimate version and i bet they could get it

While I could imagine them maybe releasing a 4" device, I cannot seem them releasing a whole bunch of different models. And I don't think I can see them releasing one with a physical keyboard.

A physical keyboard is almost certainly out of the question. Although Jobs made a point to belittle the larger phones with nonsense about "... who'd want to carry that around ..." I do expect they will have to offer a model with larger screen than the current iPhone.

Of course, when they do Jobs will no doubt explain that only Apple can do large right! If the rumored Verizon iPhone 5 is a reality and it is larger than the iPhone 4 I would peg the size at 4 inches but no larger than 4.3 inches. Now, if they go with, say, 4.3 inches and jam a sh*tload of pixels they may impress me enough to think about go back...

Great. A flood of iPhone groupies will undoubtedly cause network congestion and the inevitable data caps with tiered pricing. Time to move to another carrier.

Didn't VZW already suggest tiered data plans were imminent?

With any luck, they'll only be polluting the LTE bandwidth.

Really, Apple is still working on the iPhone? Shocking!
Also, just because there is a CDMA iPhone in the works, doesn't mean that it's for Verizon. It could be for a foreign CDMA carrier.

Verizon's the largest CDMA provider in the world. Why would it be anyone else?

Here is an update to the story:

Update: The WSJ udated the story to be more clear, "Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year." So it's not just a generic CDMA iPhone that may or may not end up on Verizon Wireless. The WSJ also added that the CDMA iPhone 4 variant will be built by Pegatron and would only work on a CDMA network (i.e., it's not a dual-mode GSM/CDMA device). Also, according to one source, VZW has been working with Apple to test its network and adding additional capacity to avoid being overwhelmed a la AT&T.

Anything new in here? Pegatron?

Too many models will fragment the AppStore and cause a lot of issues with the userbase. Imagine an impressive game pushing the "ultimate" phone to it's limits... You're going to have a ton of other users complaining about why doesn't it work on my basic phone? Or why don't they make this for my phone?

If Apple were to release a larger model iPhone, it probably wouldn't have significantly different performance and probably would maintain the same aspect ratio.

They already have big disparities between the 3G, 3GS, and 4.
