Right now I have a 22" Viewsonic TN panel. I like this size and the resolution is easier for me to read on the desktop then the 20" I had before. But I'm tired of fucking with screwed up video card scaling (doesn't ever work) and I'm pretty sure all 22" panels are TNs which in turn never have any aspect ratio scaling options or 1:1 built into the monitor.
I don't really want to go to a higher resolution then 1680x1050 since that just forces me to buy more expensive video cards more often. And these days, I've got a lot of other places to throw my money. Or I will be in a few years when we start a family and I enter the dark ages of extra money!
I've been looking at LCD TVs and wondering about them as an option that suits me. I have seen a few guys on other forums using TVs in this fashion. But I don't know a lot about them. There's some available in the mid 20 inches size range that seem like they might work for me. Their resolution is 1336x768, which is a wider aspect ratio then I currently run. I like that for games. Its less then my current monitor, and I'll lose some desktop space. Thats ok with me, I was planning on going dual monitors for productive work anyway (probably toss a cheap 17" panel next to it or something) and the lower resolution would allow me to turn effects up and keep the resolution low for better performance in games.
I was looking at these two models right now:
olevia
sceptre
What I want to be able to do is:
Play games like starcraft using fixed aspect ratio scaling. (Black bars on the sides, scale up to the full vertical resolution)
Play games like system shock 2 (no WS support) with 1:1 pixel mapping at 1024x768 (again, full vertical)
Play new games with WS obviously.
Maybe someday I'll plug a xbox360 into it? Not a big concern.
My questions:
Do all LCD TVs have built in options for scaling? How is it selected? How can I tell if a TV has this option?
Is there any reason these TVs might be a poor choice for gaming? (input lag? response times? colors?)
Anything else about this arrangement?
