Update:

Order period IS closed on all WRX/STIs. I was able to snag one that was ordered and fell through though. Silver STI Limited. Should be here sometime around the middle of May. Thx for all the input.

where in the u.s are you located? Congrats btw. Placed an order for my wrx last week 8 to 12 weeks to go

I lost all respect for the STI when it got beat by a Mustang V6 around VIR by C&D.

That is pretty rough, but to be fair the Mustang V6 is a hidden beast now, and the STI is a lot easier to mod for power than the Stang ever would. The 5.0 will probably be a different story, I have a hard time imagining someone putting 5 grand in an STI and being able to hang with a 5.0 w/SC (doable yourself for under 5 grand).

But they're vastly different cars for different purposes really. The STI is born from rally cred, the Mustang is from asphalt-chewing stock.

You actually pay attention to what c&d has to say? IIRC the test was done using different, non-professionally trained drivers. Don't hold too much sway on what magazines have to say about cars....it varies between drivers. I've been beaten by some old geezer in a mini because he has more experience than I do...and I've seen Miata's lap vipers before at a track day.

Nope. Same group of drivers (they take the best time out of all the drivers), same day.

nah, i'm pretty sure there was a statement by c&d when they published that years ago that they didn't use the same driver for every car because some porsche owners were furious that the gt3 rs got beaten by a z06. You forget, automobile magazines exist for marketing, and who do you think pays c&d the most? C&D is also famously known for their unreliable test drivers and fudged performance numbers on american cars. I like a mustang as much as the next guy, but judging a car based on what a magazine says is silly.

this is the article in question:

C&D's Mustang numbers for 1/4 and 0-60 are actually significantly lower than other major sources such as Edmunds and Motor Trend (which I prefer to C&D).

Given the power, lateral grip, and weight of the Mustang (as well as everyone and their dog showing the 5.0 being a virtual mirror image of M3 performance), it's not really a shock that a stock V6 Mustang (obviously with manual, track pack, and gears) can hang with a stock STI.

Throw a few bucks into the STI and the Mustang would fall behind quickly though. Or just drive on a RallyX course 😀

You're pretty sure? They have four different drivers and they all cycled through each car at least twice. You have information that contradicts that?

You forget, automobile magazines exist for marketing, and who do you think pays c&d the most?

Unless you have actual evidence that automakers pay for better results, this is a BS argument. What happened in 06 when the Mustang turned in a completely miserable performance? They just weren't paying enough? Chevy and Dodge and Mazda were paying more?

C&D is also famously known for their unreliable test drivers and fudged performance numbers on american cars.

No, but like every other magazine, they get accused of it when people don't agree with their results. I actually see MT accused of this more than any other mag.

So where would you go to find out track times for various cars? Owners? Worse than magazines in virtually every respect.

That's because Edmunds and the rest are so bad at acceleration test. I mean, really bad.
C&D, while just being car editors...aren't that shabby for journalists.

Not sure about the earlier comment about faster domestic 0-60 times. They pretty much get faster 0-60 times out of most cars. I've subscribed to many car rags for years, and it's always been that way.

thats not true on my transmission (06/07), but was true on the earlier models and the 08+ models. they changed the ratios on the hawkeyes, and then since then have had to revise both the engine tuning and gearing for emissions regulations...so it went back to slow....meh...there is also more weight due to chassis reinforcement on newer models iirc. i'm sure it would kill the wrx on lap times.

my 2nd gear tops out at 65, i double checked on the way home.

But the OP is shopping new? Making that 08+?

appropriate thread timing. went to a local subie dealer to check out a white WRX this weekend. dealer wouldnt let me test drive it since I wasn't sure if I was going to buy it or not. salesman said since the WRXs are so rare, they dont allow test drive unless a buy commitment is made. WTF!?!

OP, have you looked into Subaru's VIP buying program? Someone here made me aware of it, and apparently you can get new subies at invoice that way

2% off invoice actually. But it takes 6 months before you can use the program

No, it's the silly market we are in. The Forester is a HUGE car now, like pretty much everything else people 'want'. 🙁

Same with Outback, same with Legacy...
Try fitting 4 adults + a car seat into an older Legacy/Outback/Impreza/Forester. Not the easiest task and the two adults in the back better be small.

Unfortunate fact of life that means we'll be dumping one of our WRX wagons for something bigger.

Did you see if they had any used '11's or even '10s on the lot? They're probably more willing to let you test drive those.

no they dont have any other WRX or STI in stock. But is it true that WRX order is closed now?!

It is true as confirmations are coming in from some states. Not sure about your local dealerships though but it is going to happen.

Also I hear that there wont be a 2013 model and the refresh will be in 2014.

I was told on friday by 2 separate dealers that orders for the '13 will start sometime in late July or early August.

wrx's are lighter also... i was surprised at the speed of the wrx... having been in a older wrx (2003).. my friend in his mk4 supra with 550 rwhp started doubting his car lol.. his car was obviously faster, but the wrx feels very exciting as well.

Keep in mind that when I bought my 2011 WRX last year in July there were 0 (read it 0) on the lots in MN, WI, ND, SD, IL, MI, or IA. There were also 0 2010 on the lot.

You were LUCKY to get one that was on it's way in, and about 75% of Subarus around here were sold before they even hit the lot due to tsunami shortages. Many WRXs never even made it to the states in 2011.

I looked around for used WRX/STi vehicles as well, and there was only a single STi within 2 hours of me in the current body style. These are VERY hard to find used in many markets, but yours may be different than around here in MN. Both WRX and STi hold their value very well, so it really doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a slightly-used unless you really get a good deal on it.

I only mentioned that since in my area (socal) i noticed that there were 2 used 2011 WRX's on the lot the day I went in and 1 new 2012 sedan. How long they've been sitting there I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure not that long.

Should he run into a situation like that I'm sure they're more willing to let you test drive the used one.
