WRX and Lancer EVO - why are these cars 4 doors?

It has always perplexed me. (The other question of "why are they nearly as tall looking as SUVs and fugly as all hell" is rather rhetorical based on their respective manufacturers.)

Clearly its because they were built with 4 doors..

Is there something wrong with having atleast SOME space, and going fast?

That's the question... why build these cars which are supposed to fun racing types, and then give them 4 doors?

Because it takes a lot of money to develop a 2 door version of a vehicle. It's basically a whole new spaceframe, unless you just weld the rear 2 doors shut, which would be pointless. Most sedans don't have a 2 door version, and the ones that do are just wasting space. For example why would you want a 2 door 3 series, a 2 door Civic, 2 door Accord, etc?

Perhaps you should ask all the owners of 3 series, Civics and Accords Coupes. All three of which are vastly superior to their sedan counterparts, without even considering aesthetics.

Has it got something to do with rallying (and rally heritage) and the fact that rally cars are based on production cars??

I'm not sure and just guessing.

I don't know, if that's the case, then OK.

Otherwise, I just don't know why they create such monstrous looking things that also have good handling and power.

Looks/appearance are very much personal opinion. Personally, I've liked most of the more recent generations of the EVO and WRX/STi

Ingress/egress is much easier in a four-door car. Why not be able to carry four people comfortably and have a fun car too?

That's hilarious.

You're looking for an M5. Maxima, maybe.

Not a WRX or EVO. No compact car can claim comfortable carrying of 4 people.

I barf every time I see one of these. You think they give it just a little bit more headroom right? That's what it needs right, to be just a bit taller, I think.

Before the rally versions of the Impreza, Subaru used the larger Legacy so they eventually wanted to use a smaller chassis. Mitsubishi also wanted to compete in rallying, and the homologation rules meant that they had to produce a certain number of them to be available to the general public. So it made sense to make the cars based off their compact cars at the time which were the Impreza and Lancer. And once the cars became a known quantity and had their own enthusiast following, it made sense to keep making WRXs/Evos based off each new generation of Impreza/Lancer.

There are other performance compact hatchbacks, like the Mazdaspeed 3 and Golf GTI. I think most hatchbacks are ugly, but many like the look and the practicality. Personally I like sedans, so I decided to go with the Evo X.

2 of them were 200+, I'm 175 and driver was 130

The reason I bought the STI was due to it having 5 doors, Makes loading and unloading stuff easier and can actually haul over sized stuff if I need to.. Not to mention easier for people to get in and out of the back.

I had a Civic SI Coupe and I hated the 2 door, I also had a Boxster, fun yes practical no.

My buddy's Evo X can comfortable fit 4 average guys no problem. The back seats are decently comfortable but the front Recaro's suck for long drives. In my Genesis Coupe though, having to sit in the rear seats is a terrible experience haha.

In what sense are they "vastly superior"? They're not faster, and they're less practical.
