Hi, new here, and almost 100% sure someones posted similar problems, however mine seems a little unique.

Recently I moved into a house with no internet whatsoever, so my parents called up charter and had em install cable internet. Everything seemed 100% fine until I tried to plug in the WRT54GS router. To make a long story short I'll just summarize the problem. Keep in mind theres two computers, my parents which is right beside the router and modem, and mine which has a wireless card and is upstairs.

When the network cable goes directly from the modem to parents computer, it works perfectly fine, however if it goes from modem, to router, to computer, it shows that it's connected, however we recieve no internet and aren't able to ping any outside sites.

When the router is plugged in to the modem, my computer upstairs will also get a signal saying it's connected, however it is local only.

Okay, with that in mind is there something I should do before it works? My friend has charter and I talked a bit with him, but all he could come up with is I need to open ports (which I really have no idea where to begin as I'm more or less new to networking.)

I updated the firmware, which gave no positive or negative result, and am reluctant to fiddle with any of the routers other settings until I can get advice from more experienced people.

Thanks for any help - TG

There's no need to open any ports on the Linksys router.

Please give the brand/model of the cable modem.

I would give Charter a call.
Chances are they are only letting the mac of the first pc connect and it just needs to be reset and the router should work fine.
You also might have a static IP, which the ISP can help you setup.

I had a similar problem, it was caused by having norton antivirus on the computer. It was de-activated, but it needed to be completely removed (google norton removal tool).

As NickOlsen8390 notes, it could be a problem with the MAC address of the router. Some ISPs lock access to their system by the MAC address of the connecting device. If this is the case, either have Charter reset the connection or determine the MAC address of the "working" PC's network card and type that number into the MAC cloning box in the Linksys router's setup page.

Try this (in this order)-

Unplug both router and cable modem from power.
Plug ethernet from modem to WAN/Internet port on router.
Plug cable modem back into power and allow it to sync up (light will look liek they do now only without the Ethernet light lit).
Plug in power to Router.
Turn on PC
See if you can get online.

In most Charter sytems the modem is allowed to hand out a single IP at a time (one MAC). The modem caches the MAC of the first device it learns. Power Cycling the modem will cause it to look for a new MAC (your router).

with cable internet I always plugged in the cable modem into one of the normal ports on the router that is typically used for the PC. Always worked for me.. If I plugged into WLAN port, never worked.
