WRT54GL more stable on 3rd party firmware?

I've been switching back and forth between the official Linksys firmware and DD-WRT firmware. It seems as though the DD-WRT firmware is more stable. On the official firmware, I get random disconnects once and a while and the SSID won't even show up.

This doesn't make sense. Linksys should know more about their product more than other enthusiasts.

To make sure this isn't a settings error, I've reset both firmwares to their factor defaults before conducting this "test".

I run a number of linksys WRT54G / GL routers, all of them have 3rd party firmware. I either run sveasoft or DD-WRT.

For the GL version there isn't a final release for the sveasoft firmware so I run DD-WRT on them, it's superior to the linksys firmware even if you don't use all the extra options, re. stability etc. For the linux gurus openWRT is great also.

There's is a lot of knowledge behind these three open-source firmware releases and i'd run a router with them over the regular linksys firmware any day. If linksys sold their WRT54G's with the equivalent of the DD-WRT or sveasoft firmware they wouldn't have a need for other 'higher-end' models ...

DD-WRT is a much more stable firmware than the stock firmware. Linksys figures as long as the hardware is coming from them, they're still making money so what do they care. I used both the stock firwmare for a week and the dd-wrt. Results, my cable modem had a hard time negotiating with the wrt54g alot of the time so once a day I'd need to reset. Wireless was also splotchy. I'm now on month 6 of dd-wrt and haven't had a single reset and wireless works very well. Open source software is usually more stable as there are more open eyes looking at the code and fixing errors
