wrt54g woes

this is a new device, i recently upgraded to the latest linksys firmware, but i've also had the same problem with hyperwrt.

the router works fine, but after a period of time, lose my internet ability. when i try to ping the router, it's unresponsive. after a random period of time, the router comes back online and works again.

any ideas what could be causing this?

I sometimes get disconnected from internet on my DSL, but I'm always able to connect to the router and check the status of the internet connection. I.e. its my ISP that is at fault for my disconnections, and my router is always still responsive.

I've used several wrt54g and wrt54gs routers and never had it unresponsive more than once every few months when I reset it. Have you tried sveasoft? Is there adequete ventilation around it (overheating?) Did you crank up the wireless power kinda high (I know sveasoft can crank it up to something like 200mw from the default of 35mw)? This adds heat.

I also have a WRT54G v1.1, but no issues here. I use the Sveasoft Alchemy 1.0 with the output increased to 40mW from the default 28. It can be boosted up to 251mW, though, but the excessive power/signals just bounce around in the room and can actually degrade the performance and signal because they are not being directed.

Anways, xyyz, you're not the first to have this problem. There have been a lot of complaints lately with people complaining with connectivity problems. As of now, it seems to be the luck of the draw on whether or not you get a good unit. Assuming you have had the same issues on more than one group firmware release, I'd say the hardware is at fault and I'd return it, with a stock firmware of course.

it most likely is overheating. is it hot to the touch? grab a small fan to cool down the router. see if that helps.

Speaking of cooling fans, a friend of mine bumped his up to the max 251mW and had an 80mm fan sitting there with the case off and the fan ran full-power (from a dedicated source) and his router, 2 months later, no longer works properly. He gets disconnect issues every 30 seconds or so, even with the power cranked down. Even if you do crank up the power and supply some cooling, be freaking careful!

hmmm... you know what, this thing gets EXTREMELY hot, and even after i've disabled the wireless networking.

so you think this could be the problem?

How hot is extremely hot? Sounds like something isn't working properly. My router is at 40mW of output and has no added cooling and isn't even barely warm to the touch. I'd probably take the unit back and trade it in for a different one.

Granted, I have an older unit so the processor isn't as fast...it's like 133MHz and the new ones run at 200MHz, IIRC. I could be wrong, but the new ones have a faster processor and give off additional heat in comparison to the older ones.

i have a v.2 version, which would be the older one right?

yeah, it gets REALLY hot to the touch. the funny thing is that this is the second unit i got from staples. the first had a very werid issue. the device would misreport it's MAC address. everyone else saw the MAC address that it should be (according to the box and the sticker on the unit) but the device showed a MAC address whose last digit was different. as a result, the device was unable to capture a WAN address.

Does this period of inactivity happen on wired connections as well as wireless? It seems like this unit is also broken in some way...I'd probably take it back.

I've seen way too many bad units have issues like yours...I don't think I can bring myself to buy another Linksys WAP. I've been setting people up with D-Link routers/WAP and I have not come across any issues with them.

the dlink stuff have QoS? 'cause when i come to think of it, i really don't care about the advanced features of svesoft (sp?) or the other firmware.

I belive linksys added a primitive QoS system into thier latest official firmware (I think they took the code from one of the early versions of the 3rd party guys firmware actually lol) but I dont know about what other routers might have it.

I don't think the consumer D-Link models have QoS...it's a bummer, but at least you'll get router stability, which is the MAIN thing that you currently do not get from your Linksys product!
