WRT54G vs. WRT54GS

I was at the store and I saw both. One is $60 (or less with rebate). The other is $90. Everyone seems to rave about the WRT54G but it seems to lack WPA. Am I missing something here or shouldn't I go with the WRT54GS if security is important?

The Linksys WRT54G has WPA when working with Windows.

It is not WDS out of the box, like the Buffallo Tech. 802.11g line.

When working with a Matching Linksys card the WRT54GS is about 30%-40% faster than the WRT54G, otherwise both would be very much a like.

:sun:

P.S. Staples has the WRT54G on sale this week for $39.99 after rebate.

I purchased a D-Link 624 earlier this month for $18 after rebate. It's not a bad product. However, I don't know if it's better/worse vs the WRT54G. I don't know if the Linksys can operate as a repeater (mode 4).

Hmmm... I wonder why they don't put it on the box. Even when I look online it looks like it focuses on WEP.

I'm using the WRT54GS

So far I'm not impressed. Fewer options and things that were simple with my D-Link are hard on the linksys. Currently, I have two issues I can't resolve and at least one (after some googling) looks like it is due to a problem unique to the linksys (works great on my older D-Link).

I understand ZyXel has one at CompUSA now for $5 after rebates. 330W. But its lacking other features, and its wifi too.

I have used the WRT54G and was not impressed. I have had lots of problems getting it to work with the repeater WRE54G v.1.

Really? I had not problems getting mine to work with the Extender. Worked beautifully. Now admitedly I did the geek thing and decided that I was going to configure it manually, and it didn't work worth crap, but I let the wizard do it's thing and it worked great. Only time I have EVER used one of those setup wizards for any networking.

It's up to you if you'd see much performance boost with the GS model. You only see the speed if you have the matching Linksys GS card to go with it. I'd just go with the G model since for web browsing and such it's not going to be that much difference. Unless you doing a ton of downloading and such, then you might want the GS.

But like others have said, both can do WPA with updated firmware so that shoudln't be much a decicing factor. Most home suers don't use WPA (or even WEP for that matter) so it might just be old packaging....
