WRT54G v5.0 Issues / New Router?

Lately I've been having a lot of issues with my WRT54G. At first it was just the connection dropping out or the speed fluctuating wildly (from 54mbps - 1mbps). I'd be playing WoW, or torrenting (not at the same time!) and my computer would decide to renegotiate the DHCP lease and everything would halt for a few seconds. I switched to static IP addresses, but issues are still persisting. I've got extremely slow file transfer inside the network (120MB file taking +100 minutes to transfer even when the connection on both computers states 54mbps) and the speeds are still erratically jumping around. It's also intermittently not getting onto the web (google.com taking 3 - 4 minutes to load, occurring whether file transferring or not).

My setup is pretty simple. Cable into an ARRIS 502G (modem is doing fine when I direct connect) connected to the WRT54G. 4 computers attached (all wireless). I've tried doing a reboot of the router (and modem) as well as a factory reset to the router. The issue is still persisting. Anyone have any suggestions? If it's to buy a new router, which one would you suggest? (Looking for one that is going to be able to withstand a lot of incoming and outgoing connections)

That sounds like typical wireless interference problems. Try changing channels to 1, 6, 11. The dropping down to 1 Mbs and even disassociating from the AP is a dead give away. It means you have a lot of noise on that channel or your signal strength is low, or both.
