WRT54g V. 5 (i know) PROBLEMS! What should i do?

Ok here is the rundown. I have a one story house with a wrt54g v. 5 router, the house is literally like an apartment, its not big, its about 90 feet long, 40 feet wide, so its a rectangle. I have the router set up in my bedroom, because it has to be connected to a cable connection, and this was the best place. It is up high, way up, the modem and the router. I have a wireless laptop that is almost always on the computer, and its always in my room so im either directly connected or i am wireless with a perfect connection. However, you walk down the hallway, 60 feet away, there is a desktop computer with a new linksys USB wireless adapter. It is getting a very low connection and the speed is slow because of this low connection.

Now this is rediculous. At my other house my v. 3 wrt54g router gets me a good enough connection on 3 floors, its like 3 times the size of this house with the v. 5 router, and it does perfectly fine! So im thinking its either something in the house, or it is the router. I am leaning towards the router because i had an airport base station set up a while ago, it was directly connected to the windows and wirelessly connected to a mac, and i could get a GREAT connection across the street, it was just perfect. Then we got rid of the mac, replaced it with my wireless laptop, and it could never recognized the airport connection. Now if i could ever get that to work again, thatd be great but apple doesnt support windows on the base station so its almost impossible to get help, (IF ANYONE HERE CAN ACTUALLY GET IT TO WORK, LET ME KNOW!)

I also have another laptop that sometmes uses the wireless connection and like 60-60 feet away he has the same problem with his wireless card. I use the wireless card in the bedroom and get a good connection but when i go out 50 to 60 feet away i get a low slow connecitoin.

SO, in conclusion, i heard that the version 5 is crap, and that the 3rd party firmwares dont support it, but then i saw a thread where someone wiht a v.5 took "DD-WRT micro" firmware, never heard of the 'micro' part and used it and was happy with it. So if i can do that, and get some help on how to set up that 3rd party firmware, then maybe i can save this thing. If not, maybe there is something in the house i need to do, i heard mirrors can cause lots of problems, i have 5.8 ghz wireless phones, not sure how they could mess with things, i just need some help here guys,

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

bigben2wardpitt, get the GL. You could try flashing the v5, but it's a bit risky and has limitations. It's worth a little more $$ to save a lot of time and hassle.

ok. but what about the problem that i am getting low connection 60 feet away? The house is old, the airport base station worked great, but the router, well we get low connection at the other end of the house, and thats only 60 feet away! So wondering how i can fix this, or what i need to buy, maybe someting more powerful then the GL, or will the GL be more powerful in that way too? I thought they had the same reach.

I guess some people like the torment.

First of all there is a lot of variability within the Entry Level Wireless Models.

I.e. you can put three devices of the same make and model and get significant differences in the distance that each one would cover.

As is this is probably the best deal in Entry Level Wireless, http://www.buffalotech.com/products/pro...detail.php?productid=115&categoryid=29

Search well you can find one for less then$60.
