WRT54G #2 as AP only?

I can't access the setup page or ping my WAP54G (plugged in to laptop with cat5e cable). I'm assuming it's bad.

I have a WRT54GL in use running dd-wrt. I'm using the wireless from that router on my main network. I have a vlan on a different subnet that I use for outside machines. I was planning on using the WAP54G on that (outside-vlan) network.

1. Can I use another WRT54GL on the vlan as an access point only (plugged into the vlan port on the existing 54g)? How would I set that up?

2. Can I use it (the new wrt54g) on the vlan network as another router, wired and wireless? How would I set that up?

Also, would I need to run dd-wrt on this 2nd router to be compatible with the existing?

I hope this isn't too convoluted. Thanks for any help.

Bob.

1. Connect a computer to the second WRT54GL, configure wireless security the way you want it for your VLAN, then disable the DHCP server on the second router, connect one of its LAN ports to the LAN port you are using for the VLAN on the main router, and you're done. You don't have to run DD-WRT on the second router if you don't want to.

2. To use it as a completely separate router, configure the second router's LAN IP address to be a different range than the main router (i.e. 192.168.2.1 vs 192.168.1.1), then just plug the second router's WAN port into the LAN port on the main router.

Edited: I somehow missed your mention of the vlan. Thanks for your comments, Fardringle. I have the wrt on order. I'll post back with the results.

Thanks!

I finally got around to doing this. #1 worked like a charm. I just had to use the vlan's ip. Thanks for your help.

This is odd...from the guest network (2nd wrt, configured as per #1 above), tracert to google ends with net destination unreachable and breaks internet access. Sometimes it will come back on its own, sometimes it comes back after I've tried a few things. Restart, clear arpcache, etc. Not really sure if it's just coming back on its own or something I did at those times.

And the internet connection goes out on its own at times. main router is dd-wrt, guest is linksys stock. I haven't tried to update the firmware on the guest.

Is this issue known under these circumstances/ Could the vlan be causing issues? It happens with 2 laptops I have on the guest nw at the moment.

Once in a while, the tracert command will finish properly (at google servers). Most times, not.

Just tried it again. One of the rare success. No problems at all on the main router. Weird.

Any ideas appreciated.
