I have a WRT160N and I was looking to turn it into a repeater. While looking on Ebay for custom antennas, I came across this router which claims to make repeating easy:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/25090322147...ee-All-Categories&_fvi=1&_rdc=1#ht_2722wt_962

I contacted the seller and asked if they could install the firmware on my router for a fee. The seller stated that for $40, I could have the firmware installed. After the seller told me this, I asked if it was DD-WRT or a custom firmware he created since DD-WRT was already installed on the router. Seller said "not getting into firmware discussions" and hasn't messaged me since.

What do you guys think? Is he just installing DD-WRT on routers and selling them as "Custom" for a quick buck? Is it legit? Anybody purchased from this guy?

Well I know I can do the external antenna mod myself. I'm not worried about that, I'm wondering about the firmware he's using. Is he just making a quick buck by charging me $40 to install DD-WRT on my WRT160N?

If he was capable to write is own special firmware he can find a better occupation than selling on eBay.

So the "thingy" has stock firmware, or was flashed with DD-WRT one way or the other it does not matter because if you want to you can flash with DD-WRT in 10 min.

Even if he was, it would serve your purpose. If you don't like the price find something else.

That's true, I never thought about that. Mine already has DD-WRT but the way he made it sound, he installs a better firmware than DD-WRT. It's obviously a load of BS, taking open-source software and trying to make a profit off it.

I have NO problem spending that kind of money IF what he's doing is legit. I'm not going to spend $120 for a $20 antenna mod I can do and installing free firmware if that's all he did. The way you spoke, it looks like you're that seller.

Almost all Linux distros are open-source at their heart yet charge because they packaged it.

Yea but they did some changes to it. If this guy did absolutely nothing and simply read instructions, then I don't believe in charging. I may buy this guys product just to see what it's all about. He has a return policy, I'll just lose the $5 shipping back.

You ripping off his config and returning the product would indeed be totally unethical.

Setting up a router even without DD-WRT and selling it for more money is not a crime.

You seem to think this should be free to you even though you can't configure it yourself. So simply reading instructions must not be the extent of it.

Please. Stop. I'm not going to rip off his config and return it. If it's good, then I'll keep it obviously but if he doesn't respond to my messages, what else can I do? You're talking as though I'm gonna take his config and start selling my own routers.

Installing it and selling it for more money is NOT a crime but not saying it's DD-WRT when I message him is totally rude. Especially since his description makes it sound like it's the best router on ever made.

DD-WRT.com has a wiki for ever router out there. See above, if he says it's DD-WRT then that's fine but he's just making a quick buck here.

I don't want to get in an argument here which is what you're starting. If you have anything that'll help me get some answers, please respond otherwise find another thread to troll.

Not at all rude...it's not in anyone's perogative to hint you into how to solve the problem yourself.

Seems like you are just bashing a legitimate seller here for your own purpose and that is not cool.

I can almost guarantee he is using DD-WRT or another available firmware...they can all do the functionality. You are more or less paying for the external antenna modification which looks like a clean mod.

Again this is not trolling, but it's not cool you are posting up this guy and are claiming it's a ripoff.

Too bad. That's capitalism. There are plenty of people out there that could benefit from DD-WRT, yet are not technically capable, or are afraid to, flash their firmware. It's not trivial. It's not hard either, as long as you are somewhat technically capable, and can follow directions, you can do it.

If you don't want to pay him, then don't. But don't try to get mad at someone for trying to make a buck, simply because you feel it's "wrong" to make a profit. He IS providing a service for people.

People like you piss me off, that post on Craigslist after BF, complaining about people reselling things on CL for a profit, after buying them cheap. Well, guess what, getting up early and waiting in line (some years in the cold), in order to get a limited deal, is what the game is all about. That's worth money. If someone really cared enough to get in on the deal themselves, then they could have done that too, but don't get mad at someone else for trying to profit off of their work.

All I know is you are now on my DNT list.

I'd suggest you not waste anyone's time by reverse-engineering their wares and just go down to WalMart and pick up a router to set up as a repeater since it's easy-peasy to you.

Just think of the money you will save.

Obviously I have no problem paying people for their work but I'm want to know what he's gonna do.

Jesus, read the damn first post. I'm done with these forums filled with morons.

wow what a thread disaster. op didnt do or ask or state anything unusual. he just wanted to know what this ebay guy was selling. its a very valid question and i dont think op should have been chastised for it.

and after looking at the ebay page i dont think he is ripping anyone off but at the same time for people who know anything about computers they could do the same thing for a lot less.

i agree if he is using DDWRT, then he should note that. but otherwise, he just slapped on a narrow band antenna and bumped the radio power to 100mw (which can help or can hurt... i think he is only able to do this because the antenna is so large. if it was a stock antenna i dont think bumping the radio power would help).

also, he did set it up as an open network repeater... so its not like he didnt put some work into these things. between the firmware flash, the modified antenna and the actual firmware setup i think he feels that the $60 or so price premium equals the time it takes him to do all that. and honestly, for people that dont know how to do it, it probably is worth it. if he does it right, it could be a pretty bad-ass repeater for $120.

The problem is the OP didn't understand how to do what he wanted and then faulted someone for selling a solution.

He was enraged that the ebay seller wouldn't share the secret sauce and also put no value on the external antenna modification.

We tried to let him know that the seller was probably indeed selling DD-WRT or an equivalent, but that shouldn't matter.

He then blew a gasket and his head assploded.
