Wrong USB speeds on a Dell laptop?

Hi all, I have the Dell e6440 laptop and see from the usb properties, that all of the usbs on it are high speed, (I was under the impression when I bought it, that they would be super speed, usb3, but that's for another day!), how do I get them all to be in super speed mode please?

There is very little said about the USB ports on this Dell Latitude except that they are USB3. What tests have you run?

The properties for them is high speed, very slow transfer speeds, I just need to know how to upgrade them to super speed. Thanks.

Did you perhaps wipe it and re-install the OS? Maybe you need to get the drivers from Dell/Intel

I'm pretty sure at least 2 of the USB ports are labeled as super speed ports.

Have just installed both anyway, and I am on win 7, 64 bit, BUT, now, none of the usb ports work at all. How do you fix this please? The helps much appreciated.

Okay, have got the usb ports working, by installing updates, but something just occurred to me, are the usb sockets supposed to be blue, for usb3? I remember viewing something on the computer a few weeks ago, that said I had high speed usb, not super speed usb, how can I find that out again please, to see if what I've done now makes a difference.

Hello Chris, You want to go to this page, select the version of Windows you have, and select drivers:

Did the laptop come with Windows 7? If so, the drivers you need may have also come on a CD/DVD. If not, you can order the recovery discs from Dell.

And yes, in most cases (I won't say all), USB 3.0 ports will be blue.

There is no "super" USB speed. There was USB 1.1, then 2.0, and 3.0 is the current standard USB speed. The drivers that came with Windows 7 will be able to handle this.

Dell does not always use blue ports for USB 3.0 SS ports. For instance my Precision M4700 has black ports with a red SS stencil above them

Test with a USB 3.0 HDD or thumb drive.

Yes, but that crimps Dell's style . The Latitudes and Optiplexes, at the least, have SS labels for the ports, but keep them black, like the 2.0 ones.

Yes, there is, just like there was low speed, full speed, and high speed. Now, there's even Superspeed+. The certification logos include the speed names, at least for 2.0 and 3.0.

Dont forget the new naming convention for usb 3.0 and usb 3.1

USB 3.1 Gen 1 (up to 5 Gbps) aka "SuperSpeed" usb 3.0

USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), full usb 3.1 speeds

I have been testing/using the usb3 hard drives for the last few months, hence the need to get this sorted. Scenario: 1 external wd passport 1tb usb3 hard drive connected to one laptop usb port and another external wd passport 1tb usb3 hard drive connected to another laptop usb port. Both with the correct wd usb3 cables. The results hover between 500 KB/second to 4 MB/second.
