Writing script/prog to list files/folders...

I don't know if this is the right place for this question but I'll shoot anyway. Basically I have 3 computers in totally different locations that I'll use/remote into to download various thinga (music, etc.). I do a lot of downloading and dump a lot of the files onto my file server at home so it's hard to keep track of what I have and what I don't have yet as at any given time it can be in 3-4 different locations before I get there and take the data home. I was wondering if I could write a script or program that would basically go through and just make a simple .txt file or ideally MySQL dB of all of the folder names. For example go through my music directory and make a list of every subfolder in there. Not sure if this is common, seems fairly simple. Also, how would I append the file with new additions/subtractions. Thanks for any help/insight.

It could be as simple as creating an sh script and putting them in cron.
