Writing a paper soon on AIDS. Any advice for topics to cover?

Also, if you could get any me resourceful sites that you think I should include, since I need 10 sources, would be very helpful. I want to do a good job on this and would like any and all input, since I suck at searching for useful information on the net.

You've definitely come to the wrong place. By the way, don't rely on web searches to do your paper. Go to the library.

The library has too old of information IMO. I went there and all I could find were books from the 80's. We've definitely got more info since then.

talk about how in parts of africa its wiped out nearly an entire generation

and how only rich people can be cured

If you look in the right place you can find much more robust and updated information on the web.

Note I never said "Free."

You should start looking in e-journals and other publications, NoSkillz. THose are great places to start.

I would avoid here for good advice

That being said, here is some:

If you are crunched for time and need some AIDS info, try the World Health Organization (WHO), The Center for Disease Control (CDC), and maybe your state or local level health departments if you need info on local policies.

For solid info use an article search engine like lexis nexis or one of the nearby college library websites - those will give you a good idea of where to find scientific and factual information.

Whatever you do, don't try to do everything online. E-info can't replace solid, published work that you can hold in your hands, give to a professor, and not have some crappy 404 message pop up...

Got any state universities near you? If so, go into their libraries. Also, don't look for books, but recent publications such as reports, journal articles, etc.

many universities and colleges allow on campus access to online databases that contain lots of reasearch and stuff like that

these databases are free for educational institutions but usually quite costly otherwise

Origins
Symptoms
Methods of contagion
Statistics on current number of people infected, broken down to show the disproportionalities between races/sexual orientations (even though heteros have caught up to homos)
Drug research being done
etc.

figure out how magic johnson still doesnt have it 12 + years after being diagnosed HIV+!!

and then we will never have aids again.

I've covered pretty much all these topics and I'm still having trouble acheiving the 5000 word criteria. Can anyone else think of something that I could cover in my paper that I might be able to throw a whole article in there? 🙂

How about a cross cultural analysis?

Looking at how different cultures view the practice of safe sex and its coorelation to the transfer of virii/diseases.

Maybe like a personal account of someone who went through/is going through/saw someone go through AIDS.
You could talk about the fear/awareness of AIDS in todays society, about sharing needles, doing drugs, safe sex campaigns, etc.
Famous people who have HIV/AIDS.. I remember there was a boxer who had it and no one would fight him.
Penis?

Well he has money and can afford the aids drug cocktail, and his type of Aids virus reacts well to the drugs.

With that being said make sure you talk about how there are MANY different types of Aids. The reason we can't or have not cured the common cold is there are many types of cold viruses, as there are many different Aids viruses. So even if we found a cure for Aids viruse 37, that may only help 1-??% of the people. Magic johnson has a Aids virus that does well with the Cocktail so that is why he is around, while others with a differemt Aids virus on the same drugs die quickly.

You could write about the drug approval process - how complicated it is, how much money it costs, how long it takes. And then you can talk about how AIDS changed things by bringing about accelerated approval (drug is approved before all trials are complete under agreement that planned trials still get done). This also lets you do "sidebar" stories on the issues with early AIDS trials like patients sharing meds to ensure minimum chance of getting placebo, etc.. and how fast each of the major treatments made it to market... AZT, Nevirapine, Protease inhibitors, Fuzion, etc...

Um, HUH?

Please explain what treatment is used to "cure rich people."

Make sure that you put in there that the Aids "epidemic" in America is not an epidemic at all. Unless you are having sex with a homosexual, bisexual, or drug user your chances of getting it are slim to none. Yes, there is the occasional transfusion contraction, but those are very rare. The reason that third world countries are getting it so bad now is because most of those people act like a bunch of rabbits and share needles. If you don't agree with me go do some reasearch and find actual data on people with Aids. You will see the truth.

For the hundreds of thousands of heterosexual people living with HIV, I'm sure your "slim to none" is quite comforting.
