Hi Friends,

When i try to write 4 DVD at once using nero multiple recorder at 12x speed, two of them fails. can you plz tell why

I have a Quad Q6600
4Gb Ram
4 DVD drives from samsung ( same series and version and make)
Corsair tx850 smps
Seagate 1tb hard disk 7,200 rpm

writing two dvds simultaneously works, but does not work for 4 dvd's at once

thanks
krishna

are they sata or PATA burners? Shouldn't matter but...

actually it would with IDE devices only one device per controller(channel) can read or write at once. And I'm pretty sure with sata multiple devices on the same controller are able to read/write at once. So if your program is trying to send data to all 4 DVD burners at the same time and only 2 of them are able to get the data, it will fail.

I don't think a magentic disc can provide four streams at a high enough speed to supply four 12X DVD burners. Perhaps an SSD would help. (Assuming everything is SATA here.)

We have a "burn station" at the office which can do six CDs/DVDs at a time. Not sure what hardware it has but I know it has a single HD. The machine is probably three years old.

Are you using decent quality dvd media like verbatim / sony? In the past, i could burn 3 at a time (16x) w/o an issue on a q6600 w/ 4gb of ram but since then i have dropped to two writers. i would think writing 4 simultaneously would significantly tax nero's buffer so monitor that too.

not to mention he is saturating his io bus.

OP, duplicators are based on SCSI normally.

They run on SCSI, not PATA or SATA.

Best person to talk to is Rubycon.
Shoot her a PM, she is probably what i consider the most knowledgeable in I/O

its not providing four streams, they are all burning the same data. it only reads the data off the HDD once, into ram... then it feeds it to the different drives from the ram

anyways... you can manually disable buffer underrun protection in your drives. This is the only possible way for a drive with buffer underrun protection to fail in such a manner (that or be so old that they were made before such technology became ubiquitous)... did you disable it? it is called "minimised data writing error" for samsung drives. (talk about terrible engrish...)
http://www.samsung.com/my/consumer/p...ype=prd_detail

I made a PATA machine with 4 DVD burners off the shelf years ago and had it read from one to a temp file and then burn back to all 4 using nero (I think it was v5 or 6) and had no problems that I recall...
only way I see you getting failed burns is if you turned off buffer underrun protection (or if your burners are utter and total crap not worthy of being sold on the market).

It looks like 2 of your recordings are failing due to 'KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR' which normally means that the recorder was unable to record the disc due to a disc problem.

You say that burning 2 simultaneously works, so it's unlikely to be a simple compatability issue. However, it is recognised that media burning may get less reliable at very high speeds.

It's unclear as to why things should work with 2 drives, and then not with 4 drives. Perhaps vibration has something to do with it - vibration from 4 drives may be enough to push a recorder off track, when it is only just operating at the limits of its capability.

Have you tried burning 4 discs at a lower speed (e.g. 8x)?

It may also be worth moving the burners around in the case, or testing with some of them outside the case, or installing some anti-vibration mounts.

Other options include trying some different discs from a different manufacturer (e.g. Verbatim) - it may be that your burners don't like your discs?

actually it would with IDE devices only one device per controller(channel) can read or write at once. And I'm pretty sure with sata multiple devices on the same controller are able to read/write at once. So if your program is trying to send data to all 4 DVD burners at the same time and only 2 of them are able to get the data, it will fail.

That's why drives have cache. 2MB ought to be fine, ATA runs at 133MB/s....

Make sure DMA is enabled on all drives (IDE devices).
Use good quality media.
Try a lower burning speed.
Make sure media is perfectly clean! One spec of dust can cause a coaster!
If possible try burning with all drives removed from the chassis.
Vibration can cause servo / focus issues and cause a bad burn. With several spindles you most likely will have an offbeat vibration. If this is excessive it can cause this logged error as Mark R suggested.
Make sure all drives are properly grounded. They should be through the power connector however if the chassis is floating there could be potential. This is unlikely but can still cause a problem if it indeed does exist.

Is it always the same two that fail and do they fail at the same time? Have your tried rearranging them electrically/physically and does that change the symptom in any way?
