I'm waiting on the Dell Venue Pro (switching from Verizon in order to get it), but from what I've observed the main reason sales are low is because most people don't know much about it. There isn't really any excitement (disregarding tech enthusiasts like me and others who frequent sites like AnandTech) about the latest Microsoft smartphones.

I think sales will increase a lot over the next few weeks. Recent marketing and word of mouth should drive it up significantly by year's end - despite some faults, it seems like a fairly polished and desirable platform - but I don't expect Microsoft to take much away from Apple and Google. Not with this first generation, anyway. RIM/Blackberry will probably see the most loss from WP7.

I wouldn't worry too much about a slow sales start. Their platform will either stand or fall on its own merits, just like the many others that came before it. Android wasn't terribly popular when it was released either, but look how that turned out...

Despite being out of the mobile game for years, I still think there is time for MS to catch a big piece of the market if they can just get everyone in their boat to row in the same direction. That kind of change starts at the top... Personally, I don't think it will happen on Ballmer's watch, but who knows! :)

They didnt hype the shit out of it like Verizon did with the Droid.

Hype has a lot more to do with a products success than anything else. I guess MS decided to not push this too hard because if there were unforeseen issues they would have looked stupid after a massive ad campaign. Maybe next year they will make a big deal out of it.

I skimmed it, but between their lack of comprehension of marketing and the fact that they keep calling Microsoft "the Vole" for some strange reason, I'm not going to be too concerned with what that source says.

The first WP7 commercials really only just started showing up the weekend before the release, the supposed half billion in marketing is yet to come. Its not like Droid, that had obscene quantities of "droid does" commercials leading up to its release.

There was a pretty deep line at the AT&T store where I got mine on Monday, at any rate.

Does the OP not know the difference between a Kin and a Kindle?

My windows phone 7 is ok. I would recommend it for my parents. Not so much for tech type people. I think I was happier with WM 6.5 overall.

Well, from the carriers' perspective, MS *does* look stupid after the Verizon/Kin campaign...

After the dust settles I don't think MS will have any problems finding a partner for another huge launch, but for now I think it's fair to say that carriers are probably a little reluctant to hitch their wagons to MS's new horse...

I am surprised it took this long for someone to mention this.

No, I do not think the WP7 will have the success that the Kindle had.
