There was a special on I think the Discovery Channel a couple of months ago called "Ouch" that showcased this teenaged boy who'd had half of his head shot off. Literally half of his skull and brain was gone, and the skin had sunk over it so he had a bowl on the right side of his head. The doctors eventually reconstructed his skull as much as they could, and he looks relatively normal now. There was also a little girl that had her lower jaw blown off by a shotgun. The doctors used pieces of bone from her hip to reconstruct a new jaw and skin grafts to give her lips and a chin.

It's amazing what doctors can do - and I hope to hell I never have to personally find out.
