So I am going to upgrade my laptop to 4gigs of ram, and so I check on newegg ok 40 bucks, I go well since ram is cheap ill just go to my local best buy and pick it up there for a little more then Newegg so I dont have to wait. Well I check there site...

Bestbuy

Newegg

So looks like Ill be ordering from newegg, but damn.... there is about 0 difference other then the model number

I cancelled my subscription in December and don't really have a desire to go back.

They are slow to catch up with falling RAM prices, especially for DIMMs. That and it's always been more expensive at B&M stores for parts, except on rare sales/loss leaders.

my limit's about $10.00.

Yup, I had to buy a new mouse, and newegg only had it for 10 bucks less to I bit the bullet and bought it and BB.

Also its not like I am surprised, but I just saw the difference and went wow lol

I've learned my lesson not to buy PC hardware from B&M stores, especially locally owned stores. Sometimes they do have good deals, but Newegg, Amazon, and other online stores get most of my money.

I'm surprised it's not higher. How many people do ANY research before going off to that one store they've heard of that sells this one thing they're looking for? Besides, I'm sure 90% of the RAM that's sold at Best Buy is because a tech told them that they needed it (and 99% of Best Buy customers have no real idea what RAM is).

I was considering increasing my RAM (a lowly 1GB) in lieu of the needless full-upgrade that I have been desperately fighting. Especially with this "cheap DDR" economy.

Unfortunately, this does not extend to DDR. 🙁 My current machine was built before DDR2 became standard: Athlon64 XP 3500+; A8R-32MVP, and so I can't use DDR2. I'm not going to authorize myself to upgrade CPU, MoBo, memory when I (was hoping) I could get some 4GB of PC3200 for ~$30.

Newegg has 2GB of the same DDR I currently use for $70. 🙁 Mayhaps I need to search more?

Shop around and you can rebuild for ~$100..$67 E5200, $10 4Gb DDR2 ($16 now), and find a deal on a board (I paid $24.99 for my ECS G31). 🙂

I presume you could fetch used parts at a much cheaper rate.

very true. I suppose I was less savvy back then. Honestly, it was the 3rd computer that I built (this, for a friend back in '03) that lead me to discover AT when doing research. before that, it was all Pricewatch + cheapest generic brand = done.

Since then, I would spend more time comparing technicals on various types. Though, it wasn't until ~2 years after my current machine started going through problems that I actually registered here and discovered that one of the RAM sticks was FUBAR.

I've yet to use the wtb/wts forum, but now that I'm back in that mode, suppose I should give it a shot.

B&M stores are only good in an extreme emergency and can't wait a coupla days for your part to come in the mail. And even then I could probably find it at a local staples for half of what BB would charge.
