Two Vonore residents filed a suit against their neighbor on Tuesday saying their neighbor set fire to their home last September as a hate crime.

After the fire, Carol Ann and her partner Laura Stutte found the word "queers" painted on the side of their garage.

According to Carol Ann and Laura, their neighbor told them, "the only thing better than one dead queer is two dead queers."

The Stuttes moved into the home in June of 2005. Police reports state that for years before the fire, Carol Ann and Laura were harassed by their neighbor, but no arrests were made.

According to court documents, several times the neighbor threatened to poison the Stutte's dogs. The neighbor lured the dogs into the backyard of their home and gave them meat. One of the dogs died after an incident.

The documents also explain that the neighbor would come onto the Stutte's property without their permission. They would also watch the Stuttes through their windows.

When the neighbor was close to the Stuttes, they would say things such as they could have "killed them right then" and "there's bodies in these hills that no one will ever find." The neighbor also told Carol Ann and Laura that they had friends on the police force that would ensure they would never be caught.

In June of 2010, the neighbor accepted a delivery of an insulin pump which was meant for the Stutte's live-in daughter. The neighbor told both the Stutte's and UPS officials they had taken the pump, but refused to return it. The daughter and the Stutte's do not have the the money to pay for a new pump and the pump still has not been replaced.

The Stuttes decided to sell their home in August of 2010, one month before the fire.

Fire officials called the Stuttes while they were on vacation in September of 2010 to let them know that their home was a total loss after the fire. Several days later the Stuttes also noticed their trailer had been vandalized. When the Stuttes visited their damaged home, the neighbor laughed at the Stuttes.

The Stuttes are suing the neighbor for trespassing and conversion, intentional infliction of emotional distress and malicious harassment.

Not only is this neighbor of theirs an a**hole, he's also a coward. My imagination runs wild in these situations: I'd like to show him that some of us queers are perfectly able to send him to the hospital.. or the cemetery, and will readily defend ourselves.

Having grown up in neighborhoods that were sparsely populated. I learned the hard way to check them out before buying a house when I bought in 2005. I have a family that is right out of idiocracy living next to me. Drives me crazy.

This guy sounds like a lowlife scumbag. Hope they get something out of him if these accusations are true.

This is why I thoroughly research a neighborhood and actually introduce myself to the neighbors before signing. We have moved around alot and have had a few neighbors call me a beautiful ray of sunshine and once even told by wife she was a sinner for marrying outside of her race.....

I sometimes wonder wtf is wrong with people....

sad part is the idiot (and idiots here) will justify it because "its in the bible" ignoring the hypocrisy of such a statement and the act.

I bet $1 that they set their own house on fire so they could feel like victims and get sympathy from the media. Also for the money or so they wouldn't have to worry about selling the house. It's happened many times before. I could be totally wrong, but the story is completely one-sided. There are no police reports, witnesses, or even counter-claims by the neighbor.

wow. where did you get evidence to that? Ok so you have to ignore the neighbor stold the pump, threatened them and the dogs (wich one died).

but hell no lets just assume that they set fire to the house so they can appear like victims. yeah thats the ticket!

The article said nothing about the bible or that the a**hole here used it as justification for his actions. Also, no one here in this thread has done this either. Looks like the only idiot here is you...making up shit that has no basis in fact. And why...because that's how bigots like you roll. You seem to have a lot in common with this guy.

and its a good thing I didn't say he is claiming it. i said "sad par the idiot will justify it because "its in the bible" ignoring the hypocrisy of such a statement and the act" i didn't say "the sad part is the idiot IS justifying it" more of a assumption (and i am betting i am right) that there will be idiots who agree with im (actually read the comment section and there are some that agree with what he did).

That neighbor would have been introduced to my 12 gauge on one of her "visits" had it been my property.

I have no evidence whatsoever, hence why I said I was betting $1 - it's just a hunch based on the way the article is written entirely one-sided. And based on experience, where there are more instances of so-called victims found to have done the act to themselves for the sympathy than real cases of hate crimes. Example - the duke lacrosse case, the census worker suicide, and a few other cases I remember of college students doing similar things.

This man could give you a thousand reasons why he has the right to do what he does and would successfully, in his own mind, defend all of them. How is he really different than us? He acts out his bigotry in ways that are illegal, but don't we vote to make the law equate to our own bigotry, imparting psychosis to law? The very same mind set passed prop 8 in California attempting to legalize hate. Can we not see that it isn't legal or illegal that defines the truth, but what we can or can't see? The truth that hatred and bigotry are evil can only be seen by folk not infected by them? Imagine if everything you'd ever learned was a lie. Could you let go of it all?

The trouble is, if you're wrong, you look like a complete dixkarph.

If you are right you look like a dixkarph with a dollar in his hand.

This is an old story. They ought to sue the local police department as well. Doesn't sound like they took the situation seriously enough. Hatred and bigotry is ugly, no matter where its found.

Pure speculation used as a basis to justify your bigotry...such a pathetic rationalization.

Hey, I'm already by default a racist-sexist-bigot-homophobe right-winger so what do I have to lose.

According to the article, the neighbor claimed to have friends on the police force. Maybe that part's true, and the police were deliberately averting their eyes? The neighbor sounds emboldened enough for me to believe he thought he had little chance of prosecution for his actions.

From the article:

Try again.

Try what again? It says the victims made police complaints but no arrests were made. It does not say anything about the legitimacy or severity of the complaints or what actions were taken. It is completely ambiguous. And thus what I base my hunch on. If there was legitimacy to the complaints, the article would have mentioned such.

According to the article, the neighbor claimed to have friends on the police force. Maybe that part's true, and the police were deliberately averting their eyes? The neighbor sounds emboldened enough for me to believe he thought he had little chance of prosecution for his actions.

The article says that the victim claimed the neighbor had friends on the police force. This is entirely one-sided and pure speculation. It could be true, but my guess is still that the victim claimed that as an excuse for why the police did not act on their complaint, when the real reason is that the complaint was frivolous.

The part that makes me stop is the whole deal with the UPS package. If UPS delivered it to the neighbors, then the neighbors refused to deliver it to the family, even after admitting to UPS officials that they had it and wouldn't give it back, that doesn't sound like something that UPS would just brush aside... at the very least, the Stuttes would have filed a claim with UPS to get a replacement, and UPS would be pursuing the neighbors. The story states that nothing has been done 8 months later.

Yes, this is yet another clue that make me believe the entire incident is phony. So the neighbor steals their insulin pump valued at what, several thousand dollars? And they do nothing about it?

Still the biggest red flag for me is that their house just happened to burn down a month before they were planning on selling it.
