What did you expect the school to do with illegal activity?

Actually....the school was "ok" with it for almost 3 years..kinda like the "out of sight, out of mind" saying.

but some asshole kid decided to write a complaint so the school had no choice but to shut it down.
The kid was probably banned from it and decided if he can't have it...

yea....he was banned. but it's just such a....childish thing to do!! "boohoo..they won't let me play..mommmy!!!"

Me thinks this kid is going to be wearing lots of porcelain helmets and getting plenty of arse beatings. I mean surely a bunch of geeks can scrounge up some change to hire a few wannabe punks :p

ok...here's the official blurb from the dudes who ran it...

i guess that whole kid being banned story was not 100% true...just a rumor made up to give us something/someone to blame. They never really gave an exact name anyway....only guesses as to who it is and whatnot.

"A message from the administration of both Rutgers and Optimus Prime:
The take-down of DC has predictably led to wild guessing as to who "ratted."
That, in turn, has led to threats and harassment toward suspected "informants,"
none of whom actually had anything to do with the University learning about
illegal file sharing on DC. To assume that a particular person must be
"the one" among a community of thousands, or even that the source or sources
knew what they were doing, is engaging in a witch hunt. Please stop.
Like any witch hunt, you will end up victimizing people unfairly. The
University Administration made a conscious choice to seek the voluntary
cooperation of students in taking down the file sharing capabilities of DC."

hehe..pretty funny that they needed to write that...

Ahhh Rutgers... my alma mater.

What happened? They killed their P2P app or something?

Dunno what DirectConnect is. When I was there (Busch Campus) we didn't even have ethernet in the dorm rooms. (Suites - Judson)

I remember going to the crappy computer lab (Hill center) with a boxful of floppies to download crap off the net. Hey, it beat doing it over 14.4 dialup from the dormroom!

how long ago was this??

ethernet is in all the dorms now....(i think)....so awesome. heh.

I was there from 92-97. Stayed in Judson the first 2 years, then moved to Richardson (what a craphole that was). Then off campus the last 2 years.

At the time, only McCormick had ethernet.
