Wow, valve does a really good job.

They release updates all the time, often in response to unrelated, 3rd-party mod teams. Steam is convenient for me; I can easily install and play games on a new computer, I never have to worry about CDs, purchasing content is really easy... etc. All of their games, if not great, are definitely above average, and run well on most systems, even though they look awesome - i.e., they scale well.

Even though I don't buy the games released by the other developers, I appreciate valve's attempts at creating a new medium for content distribution.

What do you think?

i agree, i format every few months and it's nice just to log in and download what i need... especially since i got FIOS 😛

HDR in HL2 Ep1 actually gives me a full on throbber.

Nothing comes close to that game/engine in terms of crispness and purity. Seriously awesome stuff.

Steam...what a load of crap, I'm glad I now have broadband, It used to take hours to load HL2 when I was using my trusty old 56k

Very much the case.

And Darwinia pwned.

I think overall its very good. Although they've been sort of microsofting it with the updates, its not unusual for them to screw something up while fixing something else. The effect of this is somewhat reduced since they roll out a fix for the fix so fast most of the time.

Still, some of their games have well known (but fairly minor) bugs that have been around for months that seem to be ignored.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the system and consider a fast improvement to the traditional disk/publisher/cd check system that is the alternative these days.

Ok, granted, using steam with 56k would suck pretty hard. But with any sort of decent broadband connection, it's much improved.

HL2 ep 1 looks amazing

I'm taking it very slow through this game. I want to prolong the feeling of not knowing what comes next 🙂

the only thing I hate about steam is that my dorms internet blccks the port it uses, so anytime I get a new game (i.e. ep 1) I have to pack up and take my comp to a friends house with a decent internet connection, install and dl everything, and then bring it back and play in offline mode. And there are usually plenty of problems along the way.

edit: and look at what I just ran accross 😀

I love Valve/Steam. There products have always run well on any of the PC's I've installed them on...definitely beating the track record of many other companies in my opinion who push top-tier, new technology games. Unlike some, Steam has been a seamless process for me.

Haven't had a chance yet, but I'm lookin g forward to playing Episode 1. I'm also want to download and play SiN.

I personally PAID for counterstrike and wasn't able to upgrade to the 1.6 version because someone hacked and stole my code. Basically, steam allowed this to happen and I'll never buy a product that uses them...same for valve and whatever company it was that made counterstrike. They're on my list.

Valve makes great games and this (in my opinion) is the only reason Steam has done well at all. If EA tries to copy the steam method of distribution for their lineup of mediocre games, I predict it wouldn't fly with gamers. Also, other than obvious greed, I do not see why Steam games cost as much (or more in some cases) as their retail counterparts. If I've got to put on DRMed shackles, phone home to big brother every time I want to play a single player game, give up my free physical copy of the main data files, and a physical copy of the instruction booklet; at least give me the reach around of paying a little less than retail MSRP for crying out loud!

Hacked and stolen? I doubt it...
Did you try to download some 1337 aimb0t to pwnz0r teh n00bs?

It's quite possible that that some how, somewhere, someone used a keygen and it just so happened to generate your key while you were not logged into Steam. 1 in a million chance of that though..

they've fixed a lot of issues with steam lately, so i'm much happier w/ it. valve definitely took a risk, but it's certainly paid off well.

BS - Steam is excellent for Valve only. It gives them complete control over their product and cuts out the middle man. I fully expect (provided I have the correct OS) I can run the original Half Life from the disc I purchased many years ago a decade later. I have no such confidence or reassurance I could do the same with the SteaDRMed version of the game. I do like the decreased cheating in MP games and not having to put in a CD every time I want to play a game; but we'll see if gamers get the shaft over time since Valve has complete control over the content you're now "licensed" to use instead of having "ownership" of. I'd be completely fine with the system if there was a guarantee that the content would be de-DRMed after a certain lifecycle, which would allow for installation of the content sans-Steam.

Steam can suck my left nut. What a resource hogging pos program.

Yes, it uses a whole 10MB of RAM.
THE HORROR!

Mine's using 4MB. A whole .25% of my total system memory.

Steam rules. Not having to worry about game updates is awesome.

I hate Steam, and I've heard that it uses around 50MB of RAM while playing games, which is a lot for a 512MB machine if you've got one. Never tested it though, never worried me a gig of ram...

Steam really pisses me off, and sometimes it took 10 minutes to load, or would crash 3 times before it would load. (it stopped doing that around 2 months ago) Now it just annoys me... Slow updates for me, and getting commercials and stuff for halfassed games (that fighting game), sucks.
