Wow vacuums are expensive :O

So a week ago I decided it would be smart to bring the vacuum outside and vacuum out my car. It was a dry day outside. As I was vacuuming my trunk, it was very moist, which turned out to be oil, as the guy who replaced my muffler just threw it in the trunk and never told me (I rarely use my trunk, as I usually put stuff in the back seat).

Anyway so I vacuum out my whole car no problem though the vacuum did leak a bit so I cleaned it and put it away, as well as got a new HEPA filter and bag. I go to install the new filter/bag and the vacuum would not start. I open it up and realize there's oil all over the place in there. NASTY. I unwire everything and clean everything out exept for the inside of the motor, which I hope did not get much oil, or that it just spread out evenly in the bearings. I use the vacuum for about an hour no problems.

Then a few days ago my mom goes to use it and it started to smell like it was burning, very bad, and even started making weird sounds, to the point where she unplugged it. So it's pretty much ruined, and I took the blame.

So today my parents went to the home show to look at vacuums from same brand as they've always been good vacuums (as long as you don't suck up oil with it!).

1025 dollars!!! Holy crap. I agreed to pay half of it because it was my fault it broke in first place.

I was looking at sears and they do have 300 dollar ones but we were not sure what kind of quality that was.

edit: I had put grand instead of dollars, never noticed...

I used to sell Kirbys back in the day. It was fun, and I got to meet a lot of really nice people. It also allowed me to move, unseen, amongst my victims. As an assassin, it was part of my duties to blend in with my surroundings as much as possible, and being a vacuum cleaner salesman allowed me to loiter in areas that I would have otherwise been compromised in. I really liked that aspect of the job; how everyone treated me like a salesman, not knowing what I really was. It was interesting to see how quickly their attitude changed once I revealed my true identity. I wish I had captured those moments on film.

This. There is no reason to spend $1000 on a vacuum. People may tell you that they can't live without their $1000 vacuum, but people will usually say things like that to justify an extravagant purchase that really was a bad deal.

Electrolux. My parents have always been loyal to that brand as this will be their 4th vacuum in their life time and they just keep on working (as long as you don't do something stupid like I did). Though I kind of wanted to at least go look at the ones in store before them making that decision, but w/e. This is the model here:

That model has not changed in YEARS. The color and maybe minor details, but that's it. Only thing, it was 600 bucks 10 years ago when my parents bought the one I broke. So either the economy pushed to raise the price, or they added lot of new features. They actually had one for like $1600 😱

I wonder what makes those so expensive, when a shop vac is like 100 bucks, and is more robust, is there something a shop vac does not do that a household vacuum does? This vacuum is also very loud, even louder then a shop vac. (maybe they improved that though, I have not seen the new one yet)

I am trying to figure out what would make a vacuum cost so much. All a vacuum really is, is a squirrel cage motor/fan assembly, and some plastic/metal/tubing assembly. Fairly simple to manufacture and there's not really much electronics. I can confirm our current one has zero electronics as I opened it all up and it was a very straight forward design. Wire wind wheel on the back, two metal connectors connect to the terminals, one terminal goes to power switch, the other goes to motor, then two other terminals go to power nozzel feed. That's as much wire as there is, the rest is motor, and plastic casing. Would probably be easy to even build a vacuum with an old air exchanger fan and some cardboard box, and small spiral tubing. Would look like crap mind you. 😛 Hmm, would be a fun project actually. Maybe add like 2 or 3 motors to work together and build a super powerful central vac for a shop.
 
They got REALLY taken. I bought one from Walmart for less than $100 and it works great. Probably not as good as yours, but not $1000 worse.
 
Electrolux does make the best vacuum on the market and you'repaying a lot because you're buying the best. Check out how much some go for on ebay.

I wouldn't say that, you must have found the deal of the century if you got an Electrolux for less than a $100. I have seen canisters from them between $400 all the way up to over $1500. I have never seen an Electrolux Canister for under $400, not even on Froogle.
 
What brand are you looking at? We just got the cheapest one at Walmart a few days ago, a Bissel for like 45 bucks, it works fine 🙂. Why would you spend more? They probably all use the same motor. Even if it burns out and you have to buy a new one every 3 years, you'll have to do that 22 times to spend $1000, which would be 66 years later. And I think it will last alot longer than 3 years and the $1000 vac will last alot less than 66 years.

Funny I was actually looking at that exact model and I had suggested it. And lol at "Titanic prices" 😛

We're getting the vacuum tomorrow, can't wait to see this thing. It better have an automated feature where it just vacuums the whole house for you and even feeds the cat.

It wasn't an electrolux, it was a bissel or something generic like that.
