WOW! UT2007 SCREEN SHOTS!

Repost: Already has thread in Software subforum. And it's not called UT2007. It's set to release in 2007 or late 2006.

fair do's....i thought it might be a pea roast from the software forum, but i dunno, maybes people in here dont venture there too often, i know i dont. so they wouldnt of seen it

Well, it's news about software, so if someone wants to see it... they'd probably head to the software forum. You posted in the wrong forum about a topic that's already in active discussion.

When you're playing a super fast paced game like UT2004, you have no time to drool over eye candy. "Dude, you look so detailed, SPLAT!, You have been killed!"

I agree. Looks nice but not as nice as I thought it would or should. Especially for coming out at the end of 2006 (or maybe 2007 with delays)! The unreal 3 engine shots look 5 times better than that.

I'm not being an ass. It's simple forum etiquette. You put the topic in the right forum, and you don't repost. Those are even rules for these and most forums.

Who cares what the polygraph test says or how it colors itself? The bottom line is.... Does all this performance decreasing, have to more spend money on a new graphics card causing technology translate into anything noticable?

Based on the pictures I saw it looks like HL2 to me. Maybe if I saw it in live action my opinion may change. I can't believe we have Unreal Engine 3 fanboys already. Creepy how new technologies can create techno-zombie fanboys so quickly even before it comes out.

I'm not a fanboy by any stretch of the imagination and even I can clearly see the difference between this and HL2.

Does it look better than HL2? Yes. Clearly the models are much more detailed (and appear to be using parallax and/or displacement mapping to some extent on the armor textures, although maybe that's just very high-polygon detailing), and the lighting looks very nice. The grass and foliage on the outdoor shots looks very nice as well, although it's hard to judge from just a couple of screenshots.

Is it a night-and-day OMGWTFBBQ difference (as if you compared, say, Doom3 with Quake3)? No. These screenshots are WAY less impressive than the UE3 tech demo shots from a few months back -- but this is hardly surprising, considering that their tech demo was struggling to run (at ~20FPS) on a 6800U SLI setup. Obviously they're going to have to scale the graphics down somewhat from that, or else it will only be playable on high-end next-gen parts. In SLI.

Does HL2 have self-shadowing?

I thought it did, at least to some extent. I don't know for sure.

To be fair, in the screenshot here with the flaming barrels and the jeep, the flaming barrel in the foreground doesn't cast a shadow! 😛

They have to scale it down in UT because it's a multiplayer game, multiplayer games require more power. The U3 engine has at least one multiplayer game being developed on it, but I bet the other games will be single player.

The light source is directly above it. So there is a shadow, it's just under the barrel. 😀

*EDIT* And no... your body does not cast a shadow on your own body in HL2. And sometimes you cast a shadow when you shouldn't. When the sun is the main light source, and you go under a bridge, sometimes you're still casting a shadow from a light source that's blocked.

This statement makes no sense. If anything, multiplayer games should be LESS stressful on the system, since the local CPU does not have to do any AI/physics calculations. The GPU doesn't care if it's a singleplayer or multiplayer game. 😛

Why wouldn't it have to calculate physics? There's also the added burden of updating the position of up to 60 more players.

That's how it's always been. The local client still has to do everything, the server just keeps track of what is where. The stress increases by the fact that there is a lot more "what" usually. This is one of the reasons why I look forward to the PPU's.
