I knew it was a clone made by the same people who made diablo. They broke away from blizzard to make hellgate London which flopped right? But I wasn't expecting the music plot and sound fx to be almost identical. Do they own the rights to this stuff? I thought that blizzard would maintain these rights. Some of the music and fx are almost identical!

If it were identical in gameplay it would be pretty fun at least, but I think they cloned all the wrong parts unfortunately; I want my $4 back.

The soundtrack alone is worth paying for it, composed by none other than Matt Uelmen, the original composer for Diablo, Diablo II, StarCraft, DII: LoD, WoW, and Diablo 3 as well, although he ain't alone for D3's soundtrack this time around, if you want a preview of the music in D3 that is indeed from him you need to search for the original D3 game-play showing the Barbarian that was released about two years ago I believe, in which a rep from Blizzard describes the character and the skills as the video plays, the music you hear in the background was composed specifically for that trailer by Matt Uelmen.

There, found the trailer/demo in question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byy723gTSQQ

That's the first part out of two, just listen to the music in the background, the main part plays until the point at which the rep starts talking. And, of course outside of the soundtrack Torchlight has a lot in common with Diablo II which is a given due to the team, but it's certainly not as good as Diablo II itself that's for sure, but if Torchlight had multi-player it would have been the definitive Diablo II "replacement" in the meantime until D3 comes out, but honestly even if Torchlight would have had more... say... reputation (let's put it this way) it would have been crushed by D3 upon day one of its release, and I think that Runic Games know that all too well to risk it with multi-player, but if they still do it (because I believe that they do still consider it) then they have some serious balls.

The game has a lot of functional improvements that the original Diablo didn't have.

That said, the games are very similar, but everyone knows this. Torchlight is a simple quickfix while we wait for D3.

The lack of multiplayer does suck, though, as there is little reason to keep playing the game.

Hey all,

I never respond directly to discussions like this for a few reasons, but wanted to correct this statement, just because it involves recent material and I wouldn't want to claim the hard work of other talented people as my own.

I left Blizzard as of the release of "Burning Crusade" in January 2007, and had nothing to do with the creation of that track, which was released over 17 months later. Also, calling me the "composer of WoW" is a bit off, that title has had at least ten composers, and you aren't likely to hear more than a tiny bit of my music until you reach Outland, which is after at least a thousand or so hours of play, if not much more than that. The interview I did with Shacknews can be easily found if you google my name, I recommend it if you find my work interesting for whatever reason.

And, just to be clear, even though I haven't been involved with the production of Diablo 3 for well over three years, doesn't mean that I'm not looking forward to it as much as anyone, especially the work from the consistently excellent sound and music team.

Hopefully those who found TL lacking in any way will enjoy the future efforts of our team, I know I am enjoying creating it!

It really is funny how similar it is

I played through 2 or 3 times. The barb character, forget what they called it, is way too powerful. With gear carried over from one playthrough, the game wasn't very challenging on the hardest difficulty. then I tried the alchemist or w/e he is called and I could barely kill anything lol.

if there was multiplayer I'd be playing it. when it first released they were planning on an mmo version later on. not sure what the current plans are

Wow a developer! Am I seeing things or is this real?

Thanks very much for replying! I love it when people in the industry actually get out and wade into forums. It's nothing but WIN for both of us.

I...

Ok, if you're the real Matt Uelmen the only thing I can do is to apologize about that statement I made and bow before your greatness, and believe me this isn't sarcasm from me, sir. I am a fan of your work and your tracks from Diablo II are forever carved in my mind... not sure if it has something to do with the fact that I've been playing the damn thing for... oh... well over five years. I should have made more research about that track we hear in the Diablo 3's Barbarian demonstration, but I based my statement on an article I believe I read on VirtualSoundVersion.com some year and a half ago in which if I recall correctly it was said that a total of four composers were to be expected for Diablo III's music, namely Russel Brower, Laurence Juber, Joseph Lawrence... and you, Matt Uelmen, and that you were supposed to be involved in the first bits of music we were to hear in that 30 minutes long Barbarian presentation.

But that article might have been making suggestions or assumptions rather than going with the facts, or perhaps the real information wasn't available at that time, who knows. In the end it's my fault and again, my apologies. While you're here sir, if I may, can I ask if you've ever been "officially" contacted by Blizzard to come back and work on the music, or at least a part of the soundtrack for Diablo III? I would really like to know. And on a side note I believe that your music for Torchlight is some of the best stuff you've made, especially the theme playing in the town and the palace-style levels.

EDIT: Oh! And, welcome to Anandtech sir!

My pleasure! Thanks for playing stuff I worked on. I tried to tread "Cien Años" in spanish, by the way, and gave up. All of that old alchemy vocabulary drove me nuts.

I can only imagine! It's definitely my favourite book though. Unbelievable writing, even when translated!

Thanks, though you are much too kind, hundreds of thousands of musicians could have had a career like mine and made music which was even better, I was just lucky enough to run into David Brevik and the Schaefer brothers when I was a clueless 21-year-old.

Maybe you're thinking of Original Sound Version instead of VirtualSoundVersion?

That track does seem to reference a few Diablo themes, and does it in a fun, exciting way, but I didn't sign off on it, nor would I want to claim the hard work behind it. I believe that track was written by Russell Brower and performed by Eminence Symphony Orchestra, though I can't officially state that, other people may well have been involved.

I'm in touch with people at Blizzard all the time, I consider many of them good friends. The Shacknews interview has a discussion of this.

I'm glad you liked the "Palace" track and town in TL, those are probably my favorite two tracks from the game, as well. Hopefully the greater development time we have on our current and future projects means a more satisfying product in terms of many elements of the game, including the soundtrack.

I should probably stop here - I'm not a PR guy and don't want to get in the habit of posts like this, it's just a matter of time before I either spill unreleased stuff or say something inadvertently offensive.

Thanks!

I got Torchlight and it was really great, except no multiplayer. My friends wouldn't get it, because there wasn't a reason to without the MP. So I didn't play it much.

Its not identical. Its similar. Probably because its a hack'n'slash and aside from occasionally going to a sci-fi setting, no one can come up with anything new.

And Diablo was NOT the first. It was the first to be popular. They ripped off the ideas from a handful of lesser known titles and were the first to integrate everything well and make it fun.

Titan Quest is just the next level of that. Nothing new, but all the best ideas melded together perfectly.

I loved torchlight. Beat the whole thing. But it quickly got boring afterward, because it was just more of the same, and I wanted to show off my leetness by PWNING all your n00b asses with my 1337 gear and skillz.... ; ) This game is begging for multiplayer...

Thanks for posting and sharing some insight with us all!

You're responsible in my opinion for the most stellar and epic game soundtrack ever, Diablo 2 of course. The music is sublime, perfectly fitting and very impressive, either the first time you heard it or after making a game and it opening for the 10,000th time, and hearing that tune in the rogue encampment ^ ^

I knew he was involved in WoW music as well, I've never looked up what particular songs though. My bets are definitely that he composed the song in Hellfire. Off to check.

Thanks again.
