man, the place looks like one of those post apolytic movies...

Indeed. The roads are completely falling apart. There are some streets with all the houses burnt down or torn down and the forest is taking it back over. One of my coworkers was driving down there and his $5k machine fell off the back of the truck and he didnt realize it for a few miles later. Went back and some ghetto trash were already trying to load it into their truck.

Ceasers in Windsor went up first I believe, then the Detroit Casinos were opened to counter them.

Correct.

Also it is easier to drive 15 minutes to a Detroit casino then 45 minutes to Windsor. I am sure that there are public transportation systems that support Detroit. Also, the traffic going through customs/immigration is avoided. And remember, some people may not have the legal documents to come back.

Inconviences abound to look at US going to CA.

Is the guy giving OK statistics anybody know? Detroit students get more money then anywhere in the country but have lowest graduation rates?

Just the like the rest of that youtube video, it's yellow journalism at best.

Yes, his numbers are correct on a per-student basis. Unfortunately he doesn't look at the size of the city versus the population. Urban sprawl has a whole new meaning in Detroit versus other cities. In fact, if it were not for the abandoned buildings it would be fair to classify many areas of Detroit as Rural because of the population!

As a result, a once packed school system has dozens and dozens of schools with no tax base. Even the elevated per-student money they get can't fix the problem.

Because of the financial issue of many of the inhabitants, Detroit schools enjoy the luxury of having to pay for multiple armed guards at each school, metal detectors at every door, automatically locking doors.... the premium for being in this hellhole of a city is very very high and comes out of that student money as well.

Detroit has too much infrastructure and not enough people. They're closing schools left and right. Unfortunately they are dealing with an attitude that he described well. Many of the people of the city have an entitlement attitude from hell. They rally in front of closing schools screaming about how horrible it is that they'll have to be inconvenienced to drive further etc. The make it hell every step of the way.

The city council is equally as bad. Horribly corrupt and utterly un-directed, they have no vision and no goal. They only serve as a hand-brake on the only good mayors the city has had recently - Archer and Bing.

If you want to discuss the quality of his reporting, look at his stance on the UAW. No one will deny they went WAY to far, but to ignore the total mis-management of the big-3 would be criminal.

He has some salient points, but more are drown in bullshit that he spews.

Most of the Casinos in Detroit literally have a highway exit that leads right into their parking structure.

It's pretty much the only way their customers don't get scared shitless on the drive in. In fact, it's the same way Cobo Hall and the Joe Lewis Arena are set up as well.

I don't think there is a Republican elected official in Detroit.

Detroit in ruins
Couldn't watch past two minutes, blaming it on leftists is really just very naive. They are a factor. He said it's had gov entitlement since 1961 and how has that worked out for them as he pans past runis. Yeah, how indeed, for the next twenty years it was a powerhouse.

Detroit is a failed city for various reasons. I'm sure the culture of the local residents is reason #1 and that includes not just political persuasion but family culture.

I'm sure in some parallel universe somewhere an Obama's policies have ravaged a Detroit. That Detroit's inhabitants may or may not all be Lovecraftian horrors, but lets not get distracted by details here.

Obama held office before becoming president. Someone even posted a pic of him when he was voted to the council, in the bottom right.

I'm sorry, but is my sarcasm meter supposed to be on for that comment? Or are you looking at the same pic I'm looking at? I ask because that ain't Obama.

Nor is he from Detroit. Though I'm fairly sure Sophita is a troll account anyway.

Hahah yeah, Sophitia is an awesome troll account to make conservatives look like complete loons.

Detroit's destruction has been the result of a perfect storm of various things that add up to disaster, pointing to anything in particular will only tell a fragment of the story.

It's always interesting to see all the people flying down 94 going 85mph in a 55 mph...not that I do it......

I work near 94 and Gratiot. I've passed a state cop doing 30 over and he didn't nab me because he was assisting on another traffic stop. Phew.

Nuking will destroy other surrounding useful cities...my vote would be to aerial spray with some kind of sterilization virus...
Fallout via wind. Maybe they can close off the plumbing to surrounding areas, making Detroit a closed loop and put it in the water supply.

He didn't say that. He said they get more than the national average, and they have a 25% graduation rate. They don't get the most money, but they might be the worst in country, http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2009/12/what-is-the-worst-school-system-in-america/

Washington DC gets more; they get more per student on average than any state averages. Their schools aren't very good either, but at least they are better than Detroit. Washington DC graduation rate for 2011 is 58.6 percent. That's down from 73% last year. Where's Obama? National average is roughly 75%.
