I've been using Firefox for quite a while now, having switched from IE (years ago) > Firefox > Chrome > back to Firefox. However, I never really jumped on the AdBlock Plus / NoScript bandwagon. I tried them a few times, and it always seemed like more of a hassle than it was worth to get everything set up the way I wanted. Often times, I had to allow most of the scripts on various websites just to ensure all of the features worked. Go to a new website? A bunch of clicks just to make sure I could use it.

Anyway, I noticed several websites were now temporarily crashing due to a script failing to load or run. Annoying, and it's been happening more and more. I've cleared my cache, I don't have any addons, I've updated plugins like Flash, etc. So I finally Googled the issue, and of course, the top suggestion is to install NoScript. Fine, I'll give it a whirl again. I added AdBlock Plus while I was at it.

Holy... CRAP. Sites are loading in half a second instead of the ~5 seconds they took before. No more watching the status bar as a site loads Facebook plugins, ad services, and other third party junk. I'm a web programmer, and I work with Javascript among other languages on a daily basis. I can't believe how much crap websites are running these days. We would never do this to our clients' audiences.

Cutting and pasting is borked beyond belief with their recent update, too.

Thanks for the information, I did not know an addon such as "NoScript" existed, but I like the idea and have installed it.

I do use Firefox a lot, but sometimes the NoScript and or Adblock Plus causes problems with logging into some of the sites I use. I've tried disabling all addons for those given sites, but the problems persisted. I finally went to using Chrome for those specific sites and use Firefox for the trouble free sites.

Welcome to the club my friend - enjoy your stay! I love not being constantly at risk of infection. I actually do allow some ads to load from anandtech and ars technica, just to support their site.

Every install of FF has no script and adblock. I'm shocked and amazed when I see people browsing a site with tons of ads. I forget they exist.

I switch between them all now and then just to see which seems to load sites snappier. Oddly enough IE11 is crazy fast on mine. So I used a Hosts file and some tracking protection and takes care of most of the Ads. Usually I was a big Chromium fan but recent versions felt a little laggy.

Whose update?

I've been a long-time NoScript user until the last week or so, now I'm using ABP only (no YouTube ads, joy!). The only niggle I have with it is that Firefox takes about two seconds longer to start.

I dump ABP and Ghostery, at the very minimum, to every computer in the house.

Chrome has been randomly crashing on my computer since v24... I had to go find an older version and install that.

Adding in blocking in the hosts file is also nice. :)

Want to advertise? Fine. I get it. You want people to buy your stuff.

Don't be an obtrusive attention-whoring prick about it.

I just couldn't take the video ads that pop up and start blasting on every website these days. I would be at a quiet place or work and getting blared.

I don't generally mind ads, even animated ones, but you better not start making noise. I'm pretty good at focusing my attention, and I always kind of liked the Times Square look some web pages had back in the day :^D

I'd allow ads if they weren't a security risk. I also don't want to be tracked. All ads get blocked, as well as trackers and web bugs with Fanboy's ultimate list on ABP. NoScript blocks almost all scripts, and I allow on an individual basis. I have very few permanently whitelisted. You never know when a trusted domain will start serving malware.

You might also want to install CertificatePatrol. It's generally a nuisance, and I ignore it, but it's good to pay attention on sites where you really need security. It'll let you know if a certificate is bad, and you aren't where you think you are.

Of course you'll also want to disable 3rd party cookies, cause fuck 3rd parties. You may need to make a couple of exceptions, but generally 3rd parties are up to no good.

Adblock is awesome

Noscript is horrible. Way to many websites I use would never work right because it blocks every essential feature I need.

I hear you. The worst offenders are "media" sites like the online versions of newspapers. I was actually going to have a t-shirt or bumpersticker made that says "Waiting on ad.doubleclick.com." And of course, that would be only the most recognizable of the 90 zillion scripts most consumer sites load.

You know that you can whitelist sites you trust, right?

Yeah that's the point it's way to many websites. So what's the point of using it then if I just have to unblock every website I need to use. Adblock does everything I need without being a problem.
