QFT. You are exactly right, that's how this board works.

I hate when Linux/Mac fanboys say this. Is it just coincidence that Linux/Mac use the exact same GUI ideas that Microsoft uses with Windows products, and has been for over 10 years? All other OS's borrow heavily by using windows and taskbars that Microsoft "invented" for their OS's, yet nobody compains that Linux/Mac OS's aren't being original enough with thinking of something else.

I HATE this sh!t, it's always a double-standard with Linux fanboys.

I have Xgl installed. It's fun to play around with, but I'm not currently using it as there's no kde-window-decorator yet.

I also tried it out on my laptop with the Kororaa Live CD to see how the GF4-MX420/32MB would handle it and it was really smooth.

errr.. microsoft swiped the idea from apple, who in turn swiped it from xerox.

ergardless, this is pretty cool for pulling it off on a old hunker (relateively I suppose). Only.. the video was sped up.. who is to say it is even usable like that.

The only feature I wish windows had is a counterpart to OS X's expose.

The longer I watched it the more I realized that I hate this sort of crap and it's one of the big reasons I don't like OSX and one of the reasons I'll probably be turning a bunch of "pretties" off in Vista. It's like ricing an OS.

I can't believe so many of you don't like this. I think the features they demonstrated look incredibly useful and not just eye candy.

Novell Linux has just released this amazing technology demonstration video showing off some of the new features of their impressive operating system. While Windows Vista takes about 500MB to boot this Linux technology can run on almost any hardware. If you have ever seen Windows Vista then you will know it's extremely slow and buggy. It has been in development for nearly 5 years. This Linux technology has only been in development for about 5 months and you will notice that it's running very well. The system used was an old system with only 256MB's of ram. Windows Vista won't even boot on that. This shows that yes you can have awesome eyecandy without having to have 4 graphics cards and a Quantum computer. Linux has yet again reinvented the desktop. Linus has no reboots, not even in installation, Linux has ADM technology which means no need to install drivers anymore unless you want, Linux has SHC technology which means that if a program was to lock up it would automatically fix the program while it's running and carry on. Linux also has no spyware and virus's. Oh and it's easier to install then any Windows. So why do people still use Windows? Beats me!

They may be useful... but I guess the best way to put it is like this:

I wouldn't make cruise control a requirement when shopping for a car if my average drive is only a few miles. If you throw it in with no difference in price, performance or maintenance, I will gladly take it, but if I don't need it, I'm not sacrificing for it.

Just like with Vista. Turning off the OSX look and non-function animations and graphics will probably be my first order of business.

Yawn!

It would be cool for 5 minutes then file it in the trash as useless eye candy just like transparencies, or WinXP/ME bloated craps.

I would be more impress if they spend more time on making software run smoother and correlates better between each other.

I want to test this out for the office. We're looking for ways to save money at work, and one of them is by switching from MS.

I don't think it's stable enough for office use. The xgl stuff is still in development.

Can the XGL effect be applied to any linux os's or is it part of another os itself?

Very nice. I used to have a lot of stuff that made it do some of that. I wonder where it went.

Then why do major internet DNS backbones running Unix/Linux get f---ing annihilated with large scale DOS attacks? According to you, Linux can detect and fix application problems, but can't filter out simple brute force network spoofing.

Even with Linux, you have certain people at the bottom of the bell curve :)

As for that fancy desktop - big deal. I bet of you turn all that crap off the system runs 2x as fast.

Linux is always a viable option for saving cash $$$ on pesky Microsoft licenses. For desktop use though, I'm skeptical as to productivity gains because it's hugely application related. Options are options though. Set up a desktop with your core apps and give it a swing.

I'm not going to toot Novell's horn though. I've worked on numerous Novell backbones sinece the mid 90's and have yet to see Novell anything be cheaper in the long run than MS, and that's not saying much.
