I loved it! A couple of weeks ago I watch "The Wind Talkers" and that is the sort of movie I was expecting.. and it really surprised me. Very reminisent of Saving Private Ryan for the battle scenes, though it had just enough use of aircraft, equipment, etc. to bring in that touch of modern day combat versus 1940s WWII.

Anyway, if you haven't seen it, go NOW! Yes, it's very early in the morning, but go!

Have not seen it yet, need to though. What the hell are you doing up at this time of morning, Jugernot? 😉

Just got a new DVD-RW burner yesterday evening and I've been trying to figure out the ins and outs of "backing up" some of my DVDs. 🙂

I think I've finally got it all figured out. Matter of fact, the version of We were Soldiers I watched was a burned copy in my standalone dvd player.

Damn, I wish I had toys like that! 😀

The cut scenes are pretty good. I liked the one where the soldier did not have his ribbons on, so the noob officer told him to come back with them on. I wont spoil it, but that was classic.

😀

battle scenes = ok

rest of movie = steaming pile of cr@p.

the stuff with the wives was simply horrific. while i felt for the real soldiers, i didn't give a cr@p about the ones i saw on screen.

Battle Scenes were fantastic, the scenes with the wives helped illustrate the horror of war felt by the Soldeirs wives and the rest of the movie was riveting. One of the best war movies I've seen.

I loved the movie. I agree that it was one of the best war movies. It didn't just give a good perspective from the soldiers, but also their wives. Amazing stuff.

i know their intent with the sappy scenes, but it didn't work for me. doesn't touch saving private ryan. i'm probably sick of gibson too.

My GF and I watched it in the theater when it came out. She cried all the way through the movie.

Her father and his brother are Vietnam vets who have some serious issues because of what they went through over there. All she could think about was them as she watched the movie.

IMO, the best scenes in the movie were those that focused on the wives and what they went through. The rest of it was total cheese. I wanted the cornball photographer to become a casualty. And then there was the asian soldier who was so proud to be a new papa. Yeah, you couldn't see that he was going to be toast. Or Mel Gibson's character's behaviour when his soldiers tell him that they're about to be overrun on all fronts. His eyes darting right and left, desperation so apparent on his face, he calls "Broken Arrow!" and turns the tide of the battle. That movie on the whole sucked. I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes. What are you guys smoking?

You are so full of sh!t.

I thought the film was decent. Also, FWIW I've had veterans tell me that it is one of the most realistic Vietnam War films they've seen.

Madeleine Stowe's grossly inflated lips were very distracting, though...it looks like two giant pink slugs attached themselves to her face. Pity, she used to be one of the more attractive actresses in Hollywood IMO.

I really like the movie. The battle scens were intense and I really like the chess match between to field commanders.

The scenes of wives were very good, it is very rare for a military movies to show the emotional rollercoaster rides of soldier's families,

I'm sure it was terrifying for soldier's wife or parents to see military officer coming toward their home.

I think the scenes showing the battle from the NVA Commandeer and the NVA Soldiers perpective was good.

I agree, it was good move on director to show thoughts of enemies, to show enemy's motivation.

I believe the movie "Thin Red Line" attempted to show Japanese perspective, but didn't quite do as well as "we were once soldiers".

I enjoyed the movie also. Very well done. And my Dad was marine intelligence during the Vietnam war, so it hits home for me....

Battle scenes were great, but the other stuff was way too cheesy. I understand the patriotic duty of fighting in the war and the whole racial discrimination bit, but please don't shove that stuff into my face with contrived tear inducing scenes catered to the brain dead.

I thought it was funny how that old sargent was walking around in the middle of the battle with his pistol drawn picking dudes off one by one. I know he's one crusty, tough SOB, but still, come on!

What I DO like about it is that it at least put a human face to the enemy. They were people too.

Loved it! Breaks the mold of, "We good, they bad" and though it's based on Vietnam and whatnot, it really is a movie about war in general. The movie doesn't whitewash war, "Glory" and "Honour" were replaced by the reality of "Blood, Sweat, and Tears". I didn't find this movie "contrived" at all.
