Wow, that was odd

So I got out of bed this morning, and began my usual meanderings around the internet to see what was going on around the world of technology.

I have a set of Creative speakers, don't recall the model. The volume was turned down to minimal levels, the lowest it would go before being off. Suddenly, there was a loud pop from the speakers and sub.

Thinking I accidentally kicked a cable, I checked the cable setup. Nothing wrong, everything was plugged in, including the power brick into the surge protector.

The speakers won't turn on at all, despite reseating the cables.

And since there's now a pungent burnt smell coming from the sub, I think its safe to say these speakers are shot.

Never had speakers blow like this before.

Any of your other electronics fry? If not, i would probably see if there is warranty, if not, then open the sub amp up and you will probably see a leaked/bulged capacitor. Less expensive electronics use chinese capacitors which are notorious for leaking/bulging.

that's a shame.

it would've been a lot cooler if you were playing a tasty lick and they exploded into flames.

Buying new speakers is always fun, especially when your old broken ones were Creative speakers 😉

Time for new ones

Thats the silver lining. The down side is that I won't have the funds until next paycheck. Which means a week without sound on my desktop.

I have a good set of Sennhennier headphones, and a set of cheap Logitech's on my notebook, if I absolutely needed sound on my desktop.

Odds are, I'll buy another set of Logitech speakers for my desktop, though a better set than those on my notebook.

Maybe these

i  my Z-2300's.

8 months of being pushed to their limit in my dorm room and still going strong. 🙂

I think it's because you were trying to play some hip hop on it. The speakers blew itself instead of having to play that crap.

I hate hip-hop. I was actually just browsing the web, the AT Software forum, I believe, with the sound volume on minimum, when the loud pop occurred.

I got my Logitech X-540s in yesterday. Unfortunately, the cables for the rear channels were too shot for me to route them cleanly to the sub under my desk. I've got some cable extenders on order, but those will be a couple more days. In the mean time, I've just got them hooked up in a simpler 2.1 setup. 🙁 They sound pretty solid, but I really want to hear all 5 speakers.

Woot, got the extenders in today. Incidentally, Allelectronics.com ships very quickly, I only ordered these cables on the 18th. USPS Priority shipping wasn't too shabby either.

Got all 5 speakers and the sub working now, sounds pretty good. Now I just need to find a game that makes effective use of them, without killing my CPU. Integrated ALC888 Realtek chip on my motherboard.

I'm still using those. I just realized how hard it is to find speaker reviews. You'd think by now there would be some good sites reviewing pc speaker solutions. I love Logitech mice but hate their speakers like most computer oriented companies who release shoddy speaker sets. I've had mine for 5-6 years but mainly use my headphones wired into the amp.
