No charges yet in Vegas crashes that killed Portland newlyweds

06:08 PM PDT on Tuesday, March 18, 2008

By KGW Staff

A Portland man and his new wife were killed in two separate hit-and-run accidents in Las Vegas just days after they eloped.

Watch KGW report on Portland newlyweds Kevin Hills, a prominent Portland antique dealer, was hit by a passing semi-truck while trying to change a tire on a Las Vegas highway last Thursday. He was killed and the driver of the truck just kept going.

After Hills was hit, his bride of three days was also struck by another semi-truck while she was trying to flag down traffic for help. That driver didn?t stop either, police said.

Melanie Hills, of Portland, is spending this week in Northern California planning her brother?s funeral.

?It's very heartbreaking and we're in shock,? Melanie said.

The loss is difficult already, but made worse by the nature of the crimes. Four truck drivers were being questioned in the case and police said one of them was found cleaning evidence off his rig.

?It?s pretty conclusive evidence that that vehicle was involved and did at least try to make it appear that he was not," said.

But even with that, no one has been arrested, no one charged.

"I feel for him I feel for his family. I hope he comes forth and apologizes...for what ever he has done so at least we know he has a heart," Kevin's father Ken Hills said.

Hills recently moved to Southern California where he met his wife but he still called the Northwest home.

Funeral services for Kevin will be held in Grass Valley, Calif. this weekend.

So how does it keep going then? Police tried to question some truckers, but the police where hit by trucks, which also didn't slow down. Paramedics arriving on the scene were struck by more trucks. A news helicopter flew overhead capturing footage, but it too was severely damaged by a truck. Shocked by what was just seen, the reporter back in the studio composed herself and tried to continue, when a semi barreled through, killing her as well.

And now you, reading this at home or at work, LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!! A TRUCK!!!!!!

Really though, what did his wife do to try to flag down a truck? Rule 1: Don't run in front of a large, heavy, moving object.

Changing a tire.......well, assuming you don't have flares in the car, maybe kindly ask your wife to go farther down the road to alert traffic to a hazard ahead.

Sad, in any case though. I'd like to know the circumstances that allowed two people to get killed like this. Was it reckless driving, or good old fashioned stupidity?

wow, those drivers can DIAF for that

the thing is, they may not even know they did it.

Until they show up where they were going and the people ask why the front of the truck is red.

But I can see that the drivers are sitting so high and a 150-200lb splat on a truck haulling 80,000lbs isn't going to register to the driver.

Isn't always so much a splat like in the movies.
