Man, I can't believe that when I was in college they had the entire campus running on a single T1 line. We're so spoiled with our cable modems. 😀

****** when i was in college i had to make due witha dial up line.

yeah but you are right. Last place i worked had duel T1 line split between a bunch of people.

now you can get something far faster to the house LOL.

though don't bitch about 1.5Mb line. thats all i have and its far better then the satalite hookup i had! though i could upgrade to 6mb if really wanted.

GOD,,wawaaaa...when I was in college the whole college was on dial up......

I wasn't even that lucky when i was in college. We had to run around with floppies.

god i hated that.

I had one floppy die on me. I had just saved a 10 page paper on it (yes i checked to make sure it was saved right). put it in my backpack. walked maybe 75yards down the hall and turned it in (we had to turn in the floppy's to the proff). during class the proff would read the paper etc.

he called me up and asked why i turned in a blank disc =(

oh man that really scuked.

Why would the real cable companies not have the ability to service your building? They just don't want to or you're outside their area? If nothing else, get everyone in the building to sign a petition and send it to the other cable companies saying how you'd all love to sign up if only they had service there.

Yah I am not even worried about price.

It's the fact that my fastest option at this point is only 3Mb/sec.

It just sucks that I really have no power to do anything at this point to get a faster line(

You city folks need to get a life.

There is a large part of population in the U.S. stuck with dial up and some areas that dial up won't even work because the telephone lines are so crappy.

Give me a break.

lol ... "you city folk" ... why don't you go kill the cow and cook supper, make sure to put some pop on the table too.

I honestly don't know. it's an old building and it's just completely pre-wired to get cable tv and internet from this one company. I'm assuming that the building had some long standing contract w/this MDU service that they are in the middle of still.

But anyways, I'm out until tomorrow cause I don't have internet at home and I'm leaving work 🙂

It's soda or cola here.

unless your bittorrent machine is on all day downloading all kinds of stuff, 1.5Mb is more than enough for normal web browsing.

Some people think their 6Mb line is better than their neighbors 1.5Mb line until they measure the bandwidth during the day and find out that the advertised 6Mb speed is only true @ 3AM in the morning. In areas that oversell the lines, a 3Mb line is just as slow if not slower than 1.5Mb so I would not be sad about it until you've actually experienced the speed for yourself.

🙁 I've never even seen a 10 MB line. We're limited to one rural company w/ 1.5MB tops. It's 49.95. I kept calling and switching back and forth. I'm finally on 1.5 and they forgot to change it, so I'm paying the 512k rate. That's as good as it gets here, lol 🙂

My internet just got upgraded to 10mbit, and I don't even live in a major metropolitan area.

Move to Korea -- I hear they have fast connections. 😀

We used to live in apartment complex in Atlanta that had one shared T1 or something like that. At peak hours, I used to get 1-2 kbps. I complained to the parent company and got them to upgrade the line and refund all internet charges for a year. That was nice!

That really depends on the company of course, and even on your neighbors. I get a solid 7 Mb off my 7 Mb cable connection all day long, but if I lived in a different area I might not. The neighbor might not be getting 1.5 Mb off their 1.5 Mb line either, even if it's DSL - DSL lines are multiplexed in the CO, and the phone company could oversell.

That's about what it cost back home for comparable speed.
The TV had a fairly snowy picture, and sometimes the audio would cut out from the left or right side.

Not much you can do with local cable monopolies. I should just be glad we even have 2-way cable Internet out in the middle of nowhere.

How long has this cable company been around? Perhaps the 1.5mb is tops for now but in the future maybe they'll expand and offer faster speeds? I'd imagine that if the company is fairly new that it's tough to compete with the other services until they get established....then you might see some upgraded speeds...if they see that people are interested and that there is a need for it. If not, go with the DSL. 🙂

Fixed for you.

Fast and cheap for all.

They consider it as important as water and electricity.

The U.S. only for max profit for the least possible.

I constantly downloaded at over 900Kb/sec when I had my 10Mb line. I could miss episodes of TV shows I wanted to see and have them w/in like 10 minutes. It was pretty nice 🙂 and yes I have become internet speed spoiled.

I can get 12M connection for $60/month

I work for my ISP, so my connection is free.

Right now I have a 54meg 802.11a backhaul from my house to the office. It averages around 30 meg though, due to the distance of the link (about 19 miles).

Using a 1 meter andrew antenna, running a starOS wrap board on each end.

I started college in 05 and that was the first time i ever had broadband for more then 3 months. It was amazing going from 5.4k to 3000k download rates. Oh how i miss getting top gear from devious at 3 megs a sec 🙁

Hope you can find an alternative op.
