Wow, so excited. Can not sleep.

For about 3 months no, my son has said he wants a Polar Express Train set.

This:
http://www.lionel.com/Products/FindexPolarO.cfm

So, he is getting it, but I built him a train board that is just over 4'x8'. It has an inner and outer loop that is connected via a crossover. And a tunnel and one working accessory (a train crossing light for a road).

I am so excited about seeing his reaction to what Santa got him that I can not sleep. I have not been like this since I was like 13 (20 years ago).

Anyways, my son is just over 4 years old and I can not wait to see his reaction.

$300 for a train set?! Are you insane!?

Admit it, you just want to play with it yourself.😛

It's like boobs, made for babies, played by men.

My son is a good kid. He will treat it right. He isn't the kind of kid that will slam things around.

It's a bit pricey, but this is a starter set. In future years, I just have to bu him used cars for about $10 a pop. Of course, that also mean that i have to buy some more track (switches, etc) which can get expensive.

I wanted to get him HO gauge but once he really loves O so I had to do it.

As for the price, yup $300. Not insane one bit. If you want insane, you have to look at the locomotives that cost $800+. That reminds me. I might hit up Target on the 26th to see if they put the Lionel set they were carrying on clearance.

And yes, I am looking forward to playing with it myself 🙂

Sounds like you're a good dad. Cool gift. Hope he loves it as much as you expect he will.

Here's to the smile of a child opening a gift

I know about cost...... My father likes N scale. A decent engine will run you $100.+
Again......

You mean something like this?

I always always wanted a train set for christmas or my birthday, never got one. We never had the room for one. 🙁

To each his own. Most people wouldn't even spend that much on a Video Card or CPU. Model railroading isn't a cheap hobby.

OP. Great gift. I still have fond memories of waking up Christmas morning to my very own train set downstairs 🙂

last year me and my wife set up her fathers christmas tree for him, and we dug out his old lionel train from the early 50's and set it up around the tree. We had a lot of fun with it, and it still ran fine after all those years, and a little electronic work.

Trains are one of those things that are awesome for a few hours, then kinda boring. At least for kids.

ahh memories...i had a huge HO scale table that we had to chop in half to move...it is still sitting in storage. i need to pull it out some day and get it running again. 2 things i miss about my old house: train set and tree house.

I always wanted Lionel trains as a kid but my parents refused to buy me any despite my childish pressures.

Instead I got legos and I think legos are the best toys ever

I had a Lionel set when I was 9 that I played with every day for months at one time. Loved the smoke and setting up the track through and under whatever obstacles I could find. I had the set for 2 years, and I forget what happened to it.

I always wanted to get one of those huge model tables and set up track around the house through tunnels and stuff like you see some collectors have set up.
That train set and freestyle legos were my favorite toys growing up.
