WoW - Single best armour sets for a Priest?

At what level?

What level are you? Remember that as a priest your main stats are (in order of importance)=Intellect, Spirit, Stamina and eventually, +healing gear (gear that makes your heals more efficient), though a PvP shadow priest build would probably choose stamina over intellect and spirit...spirit is almost not important in PvP. In PvE it's life and death, literally.

Item sets are divided into tiers.

Tier 0, the devout set, which is blue, should be relatively easy to get once you are 58ish.

A lot of priests also like Mooncloth gear, which is crafted. It can be a bit expensive as moonlcloth has a long cooldown on creation (only every 4 days, I believe).

Tier 1 is the Vestments of prophecy. It's all purple, and considerably better than the Devout set. All of it drops in the Molten Core, though, so getting it is not easy.

Finally, Tier 2 is the Vestment of Trascendence. It drops in Molten Core (parts of it) and the rest in Black Wing Lair and Onyxia. Not all of it has been found as of yet.
The set is marginally better than tier 1 (this is the case with all tier 2 sets) and thus many speculate it will be buffed in the future and this is merely a placeholder.

And of course, the PvP sets:

Champion set

Warlord's set (though you can forget about this, unless you are willing to spend at least 50 hours a week in the Battlegrounds. Getting to High Warlord / high Marshall is almost impossible unless you devote your life to it and get considerable help from your guild)

So far, aside from the occasional insanely awesome drop in BWL that's not in a set, it seems like the conclusion is that you want half prophecy and half transcendence. The set bonus for 3 transcendence is outstanding, but some of the prophecy pieces may be better than the transcendence ones.

I think devout is 54-56ish. That's what you want. It takes a ridiculous amount of time to get it, though. You have to farm UBRS, Scholomance, and both sides of Stratholme repeatedly. I have done UBRS 15 times at least and have yet to see the devout chest piece drop.

from what i gather from your WoW posts, warcrow, you're a casual player at best. That said, I think you will find even getting your first blue set (devout or the first pvp set, Champion/Lieutenant Commander gear) will be more time consuming than you think, especially if you're not in an established and dedicated guild (which you probably wouldn't be as a casual player).

As a casual player, you'll be lucky to get in starter MC runs, much less run through an 8 hour run, and much less blackwing lair.

Of course, this is all based on my assumption on your play time, so pwn me if i'm wrong.

Yes, that's who drops it. I have killed him an insane amount and he seems to drop the warlock robe about 30-40% of the time. I've seen pretty much every other class chest drop.

Also have run the rookery about 10 times and not gotten the devout shoulders.

But I did get the polychromatic wrap the last time, so I won't complain too much.

The foot, belt, and wrist devout are fairly easy to get, though.

Also worth noting, in MC warlock gear seems to drop about 30% of the time too.

Warcrow, Dire Maul.

I have geared up all my alts with Dire Maul gear and some scattered pieces of UBRS/Scholo/Strat pieces. My mage is better geared than most full Magistar mages.

Mindsurge robes
Crown of the ogre king
Mana channeling wand
Mindtap Talisman
Padre's trousers
Boots of the full moon
Emerald Flame Ring
etc.

Here is the best part. You will be the only healer there because you can only 5man DM. The runs are more enjoyable and are shorter. People can't go afk and you can tell who is slacking.

My main is a Druid and I went through the horrible task of getting 8/8 wildheart. But here is the thing The blue class specific sets have pieces that are lvl 52 and up. DM pieces are mainly 58+.

For your shadow equipment go with felcloth and Dreadmist.

For your DM runs

Priest/Druid
Warrior
Paladin - If you have a priest and people are on the ball you won't need salvation. So you can replace this class with a dps class.
Mage/Lock
Rogue/Hunter

Prophecy/Trans is all PvE, the warlords gear is for PvP (with +shadow dmg).

Unless they buff the tier 2 stuff, for now going 5 proph 3 trans (for the 15% meditation 3 piece bonus that stacks) is the way to go (IMHO).

For a casual WoW player, look for greens. Blues do offer some better stats and higher armor, but if you don't play A LOT you're never going to get a complete blue or purple set. Some blues that are BoE can be bought at the AH for like 50 gold, but there are comparable greens that have a few less stat points and a few less armor points for like 5 gold. I don't go out looking for blue items... if I get them, awesome, I'll use them. But I don't go somewhere with the intention of getting blue or purple items because it just becomes too disappointing when you spend 4 hours in an instance and don't get a single piece you're looking for. It really helps to be in a good guild cause people in pickup groups tend to be more selfish. For example... 3 members of my guild and two others from different guilds went to Dire Maul... as soon as we killed the boss one of those guys wanted, he left the group. He also looted a Pristine Black Diamond that he got away with too even though we decided before we went into the instance that we'd gather up loot as we went along and distribute it randomly if nobody needed it.

warcrow : the single greatest aspect of the priest is survivability. A priest with 5000 hit points is no easy cookie to down...

Depending on your dynamic, depends on your gear. Noema's post sums up pretty much the gear you can get and Glavinsolo sums up the DM gear our there. There is also ZG gear now that we haven't accounted for.

Really : unless you plan on turning hardcore (or at least more hardcore) anytime soon : i'd say your best bet is devout. It'll give you decent hit points and mana. From there suppliment the devout pieces with loot from DM and if you can ZG. there are a lot of blue pieces (like spiritshroud leggins and padre's leggings) that will be better suited for purposes the devout can't do. But i'd say go for Devout, pick up some random blue's along the way, and do some DM to get some of that stuff too.

Your gear will be tailored (heh you wear cloth, get it?) to your playstyle as well as what's available to you. Just hit 58, and start doing runs everywhich way of everywhich instance. And you'll eventually gear yourself out.

edit:
my gear stuff is in my sig : you can see what i wear. this gives me a decent balance of mana, hitpoints, and healing/regen to do well in pve and pvp. (i mainly group pvp though so i dont need to be loaded up on the +dmg gear.. though i do have some if i need it in the bank).

Just another thought. Nobody asks a Priest to join their group for their DPS capabilities. Everybody see's a Priest as a healer, with the exception of some Priests who insist on specing themselves Shadow and calling them selves a DPS class. Bottom line, when someone is asking for a Priest for their group, they're looking for a healer. If they wanted a DPS caster they'd ask for a Mage or Warlock. So when chosing gear, it's best to chose gear that will improve your healing capabilities... whether's it's Intellect for a larger mana pool or items with an effect that increases healing spells or reduces threat. In a good group, a Priest doesn't have to worry about dying... the tank will be able to hold aggro, and the DPS guys will manage aggro so you don't burn half your mana healing them and draw aggro.

Oh, and remember... Fade is your friend... use it to make your job, as well as the tank's job easier.
