Wow...Progressive is cheap

Will depend on many factors who is cheaper. There is no 1 insurance company that fits all.

For me and my wife eSurance was cheaper. Left Geico for them.

Every time my insurance come up for renewal I price out several different companies and every time Progressive is a couple of hundred dollars more expensive than Geico for the same coverage. It all depends on your geographic area and particulars, there's no one company that's cheapest across the board for all drivers in all cities.

I have State Farm for house + 2 cars, both full coverage, I actually had an at fault accident (first ever, had perfect clean record) and my premium only went up $50/6 months and is still cheaper than what I switched from.

ive never had a claim
ever
never hit a deer, never got your windshield cracked by a stone being thrown by another vehicle, never got hit by someone else who had Geico as their carrier?

you live close to work and never go anywhere or what? 😛

i really need to call and get my insurance changed ... i'm driving so much less now that i take the metro to work.

nope none of that, and no i commute 45 miles to and from work every day, i drove across the country last summer

luck and skill

Have State Farm here for my house + my car.

Car portion is about $40 a month

Liabillity 100K/300K/100K
Medical 5K
Comp 500 deduct
Collision 1000 deduct
rental coverage
100K/300K uninsured/underinsured coverage

Of course I'm 30, so it's dropped a TON since my younger days.
Also, I've got no tickets currently, so they can't gouge me for that.

Ehh ... lots of people can go 200,000+ miles with never filing a claim ...

I've only had 1 claim in my life (from hail damage), my mom's probably driven 500,000 miles in the last 35 years, and she's never had a claim on her insurance (got smashed while sitting at a red light once, but her insurance didn't have to pay a dime)

I had progressive. I think that pay in full today is just an incentive to switch. When your next 6mo come around it gets more expensive.

Nope. We switched from Geico to Progressive and our second 6 months were the same price as the first.

+ about 5M times.

I was jazzed a couple months ago when I found a way to get in with USAA. Got out my insurance papers to get a comparable quote, and in my case USAA was a couple hundred a year more than my current insurer (Erie). The USAA rep was taken aback but said it does happen.

Insurers have so many factors they use to rate policies, there's no way to know who might be cheaper. That's why you see those commercials saying "People who switched to us from Brand X saved an average of $400". There's probably just as many people who saved $400 switching FROM them TO Brand X.

USAA all the way. I managed to get into USAA and NFCU before leaving school because my dad's military. As long as you sign up while still a dependent of the service member you're in for life. Once you are no longer a dependent, you're fucked like the rest of the population. So as long as I keep an account open in both NFCU & USAA for the rest of my life, I'll have full access to everything.

That said, I currently pay $400 every 6 months for my car ('01 Civic) thru USAA, and $800/yr for my bike with progressive (USAA doesn't cover bikes but has a working relationship w/ progressive).

The cost to insure my new bike with full coverage will be $2k/yr with Geico, $3k/yr with Progressive, $4k/yr with Nationwide. I'll have to try Allstate & Nationwide. I might have to try one of the smaller companies too.

23, single, male, 2x10-14 mph tickets, 1 of which in the last 2 years.

Have had USAA for decades......and you get what you pay for.

Have had one claim....in 1990. Wife hit deer, completely crumpling the front end of that car. (Small car, big deer.)

Agent came out to our house the next day, talked for a couple of minutes (more about our boat than the wrecked car). Then says pick out whomever you want to fix the car and have them contact us. Picked up the car a week and a half later.....had to sign for acceptance of car.

Never was there a "we like our 'certified' repair shops" crap....just go pick out a shop and we'll take care of it.

Even waived our deductible. Didn't drop one penny for the car to get fixed.

Your parents don't even have to have been in the service, they just have to be USAA members. My Mom's Dad was in the service, and they passed it down to me.

They've always had a certified shop list for me, although it is extensive so it was never an issue.

Geico doesn't seem too bad to me. Our rates with the two boys (two teenaged boys) were a bit high, but for 4 vehicles, still lower than some of you apparently pay. Son #1 just went out and purchased a new truck; 20 years old, full coverage; I believe his annual premium is less than $1000. I'm guessing that holding a CDL helps.

have to be in the military?

I got in USAA because my dad was in the military. And then I managed to get my g/f in USAA. I'm not exactly sure what the specific requirements are now that it's a lot more lax. Their car insurance was 25% cheaper than the next cheapest one for me though. Too bad the homeowners insurance sucks.
