Hrmm, I don't quite understand. My bittorrent program Azureus has no problem downloading files but the blizzard downloader runs on 4KB/sec and then tells me that I need to unblock ports. I have the ports 6881-6889 forwarded already, what gives? The updates from last time downloaded fine...

Even www.worldofwarcraft.com and forums.worldofwarcraft.com is loading slowly or not at all. I guess they're having massive server load?

The speed of their site shouldn't affect patch download via bit torrent.

There are NO two ways about it, blizzards bit torrent client SUCKS. It has several significant flaws including:

1) It uses 100% of the upload bandwidth, choking off confirm packets from download and neutering ALL of your download bandwidth... even if 80% of it isn't being used for downloading the patch, you can't do other online crap reliably because you can't get ANY upload packets through

2) I does not allow people to seed at their discretion

3) #2 results in 2 issues:
- a - People who want to seed cannot unless they don't want to play.
- b - Because people install when the d/l is finished, the number of seeds who can upload the first 90% is significantly larger than the seeds who can upload the last 10% or 5% or 1%. The result is it ALWAYS slows to a crawl for that last few percent... at which point you sit there with expectation and leave the downloader ASAP, further compounding the issue.

I think the BT method of distribution isn't that bad IF you have a decent client. The blizzard downloader is not what I would consider a decent client. At least the days of downloading the entire open beta client (a 2.5 gig download with blizz downloader) are long behind me. These relatively small patches are not nearly as large an issue as that was. Restricting the upload available to the downloader doubled my download bandwidth and shaved close to a day off my download time of the Open Beta client.

Really was this a surprise?

I happened by the WoW general forum less than 5 minutes after the patch announcement was posted by 'Blue' yesterday (there were still zero responses). I linked to that announcement in my guild forums.

The first response was from the forum administrator:
"In other words, don't plan on playing at all tomorrow"

Sad but true.

I expected it, but it pisses me off that it's always the same block of EST servers that have problems. There are about 20 of them, all East coast "launch day" servers, that are constantly plagued with problems. If you take note of all the "server issues" posts that are made on a daily basis, you will notice that it is ALWAYS the same servers.

I know it's the same servers, and they aren't all east coast servers. I used to have my primary characters on one of them, 3 characters in the 26-30 range, like 7-9 days of /played time that I abandoned until they fix the issues. In the meantime I've moved to a non-problem realm with three characters that are now higher level than my original toons.

I'm incredibly happy with that decision, even though I abandoned quite a bit of "work" on my alliance server. Every night I get home and just play. Since switching, I have NEVER been in a queue, and NEVER had downtime that wasn't the scheduled weekly maintenance.

Just make the switch. Your character(s) will still be there when your server gains stability.

You also need 6112 & 3724 forwarded, you see this if you click on the 'slow download? click here' link in their downloader 😛 Their downloader does need to allow you to set an upload cap, though I'd guess most players wouldn't know how to use it - I've found that the average MMORPG player seems a lot less technically inclined than the average FPS player or ATer.

Icecrown, aka IceDown, is one of the worst servers, if not the worst. It's on mountain time. Unfortunately, I play on it 🙁

At the same time, they tend to be significantly more mature (attitude, not necessarily age). If I end up on TS I generally don't hear a dude taking bong hits on the other side, and There is overall a LOT less immature cursing, gay bashing and general bad attitudes as there are with FPS games (especially UT2004 with the built in voice comms... I don't really have sensitive ears, but  the things I heard playing UT2k4)

I'll gladly trade mature non-techies for people who know their way around a computer but have adolescent attitudes.

Dude, you're so ghey! 😉 j/k

Part of why I didn't join a PvP server. Especially one of the large and hyped PvP servers (Blackrock and Frostwolf immediately come to mind)

Agreed, I was just venturing a guess as to why they don't allow us to cap our upload in the downloader - but then again, if they're expecting players to be able to forward ports they're assuming some basic knowledge and/or googling skills, so I see no reason not to implement a cap. Agreed on PvP as well.

Yeah, but it's wierd. When I downloaded the last patch, I didn't have to forward those other ports before, and the download went fast and smooth. Well, regardless I can't play with my realm Dragonmaw appears to be having problems. I'm going to resume my efforts a few hours later and catch up on my readings/studies.

Use filerush

I got around 300k downloading it. Went to grab a drink and some snacks, by the time I got back it was almost done.

Anyone able to play? I can't connect, wow forums have this posted an our and a half ago:

A bug has been discovered in the latest patch that is causing players to be disconnected from certain realms. After these players are disconnected, they are unable to log back in to that realm. To apply a potential fix, the realms that are currently live must be restarted. In addition, realms that are still down for the patch will not be brought up until the fix is applied. We will begin restarting the affected realms shortly.

They seem to have forgotton the promised ENTIRE PVP SYSTEM.

Im saying cancelled 🙁

Dude, these are coming later. They are keeping us informed of several activities they are working on, including honor system, battlegrounds, etc...

My guess is the next patch will be more class tweaks and bug fixes and maybe honor system, with battlegrounds following.

They have said future patches will come with more regularity, and this is one case where I believe them.

Ill resubscribe when it goes in, im 60 and have no reason to play without it.

I'm having the same problem.

I downloaded and got to play a bit earlier, when I first logged back in I showed up as nothing but a shadow on the ground and the name Unknown Entity. I was in Ratchet and couldnt speak to many people, the few that I could could see me and interact with me but I couldn't do anything to them. Took quitting the game twice to get it fixed. Oddest experience I have had.

Nothing but probs since patch....alll kinds of probs. Im paying for this pos....isnt this why they had a test server?....grrr
