Wow, our university network has been "hacked"

Sweet, just got an email saying that a certain porn picture that has been being passed around Direct Connect contained some sort of back door trojan into systems running win2000 and winXP. Supposedly the school found out when the authorities questioned them as to the massive amount of warez and divX transfers that have been going through our network the last 2 weeks or so.

Supposedly the group that did it was/is using all of the comps on the network as pubs and then various groups are leaching off our T3. Suprising? No... but, being a commuter, I can get an extention on my CS project because all of our servers are being hammered and telnetting isn't really an option right now for outside lines.

With all of the busts lately, isn't it kinda dumb to do something on this scale to a monitored university?

A picture contained this?

I'd like to know how they managed that.

Must've been one of those naked_chicks_wet_teens.jpg.vbs pictures.

these people dont get it, lol they need to use IPSec and no one can see what they are transfering to each other and they would only take a modest 10% speed hit for the encryption

no unauthorized people can log into the servers, or even look at them. bulletproof.

A few weeks ago we got a buttload of unsolicited porn through our university accounts... Pretty damn funny if ya ask me 😀

We've got some pretty stupid people here... We're an engineering school, but 3/4 of the kids here are comp illiterate.

The email we received from the university president said that the pictures were in .gif format, but as viper suggested must have been .gif.something

<< How come my school never gets this kind of traffic on the network? :| >>

Top 10 party school!! 🙂 haha

No one can see the data is true, but if anyone were a system admin and saw about 100+GB of transfer in a week to 1 computer (assuming they need to be xfered via University's routing systems) anyone would be a little suspicious no?
