I think Damnation is REALLY good too. It's soft but a really good album.

Are Meshugga and Iced Earth similar type of bands? I hear people talk about them all the time.

Opeth is pretty different from must metal bands. I'm not really familiar with Iced Earth but Meshuggah is definately VERY different from Opeth, its an acquired taste (very brash metal). You should definately check out some Killswitch Engage though :D Most people that like Opeth usually like them even though they're quite different.

Opeth kicks all sorts of ass. They are easily the most versatile and diverse metal group there is. Mikael Akerfeldt is am amazing vocalist. His clean voice is so soothing and fragile, but his death growl is incredibly brutal. Yet, you can still understand most of what he sings. If you like Deliverence, check out Blackwater Park. The Drapery Falls is one of the greatest songs of all time.

As for Iced Earth and Meshuggah, well, they're similar in that all three are metal, but that's where it ends. Iced Earth is pretty thrashy, like early Metallica with a Rob halford-esque vocalist. Not overly heavy, not screamy, just plain, loud kick-ass heavy metal. Mushegguah, on the other hand, is just damn brutal. They use 8 and 9 string guitars, detuned to the point of pain, with lots and lots of distortion. It's indescribably heavy, and very difficult for most people to get into, but once you get used to them, and you start to hear all the complexities and polyrythms, you realize just how great the music is, despite being so raw and abrasive.

QFT. The Drapery Falls is awesome, so is Blackwater Park, Dirge for November, Patterns in the Ivy (1 and 2), and pretty much the whole damn CD. If you like Deliverance, you have GOT to check out Damnation and Blackwater Park at the least. If you like Damnation, check out their live DVD Lamentations... one of the best damn live recordings I've ever heard.

Agreed! Opeth is an EXCELLENT band. I also enjoyed Iced Earth and Meshuggah. Which are great! The Blessed and the Damned is freaking sweet, as well as Destroy, Erase, Improve.
Another band you should check out is Blind Guardian. They're a German band from the 80's which their albums are slowly being released in North America. I bought Nightfall in Middle Earth. F'n awesome album. Another great band is Armored Saint. I just got one of their CDs called Symbol of Salvation. Incredible CD. They are definately worth checking out, IMO.

Edit: Also, Hammerfall and Fireball Ministry are quite badass as well.
