Wow! Onboard Asus P4B266 sound is very good! But how many CPU cycles does it steal away from me (if any)?

I just tried out the onboard sound on my P4B266, and it's quite good! It's about equal to the SB Live! 5.1 that was in there! However, I'm curious if this uses up any more system resources (CPU usage) than my old SB Live! So far it seems fine to me, but does anyone know if it uses more resources?

Thanks.

As a rule, integrated items will use some resources; especially when compared to a PCI device. However, the amount used for sound is extremely minimal and I wouldn't worry about it. Video would be another matter. Don't sweat the small stuff! Enjoy!

Thx for the reply Buz2b. It seems like the onboard sound does as good a job as my SB Live!, which is great. Now if only I didnt buy that extra soundcard...

<< how about the onboard NIC included with the ECS k7s5a? >>

Yes, it takes a tiny bit of your resources also. Of course, you could always switch to Win2K or XP and not have to worry as much about the resources. ;)

I know what you mean. I bet I have two or three extra sound cards laying around here.

jiffylube1024 - Are you still running your 1.8A @ 2.25Ghz AND using the onboard sound? You're not having any stability issues doing it this way? I've read of some people having trouble OC'ing with their onboard sound enabled. Maybe it's not an issue with this board.

I could not overclock the P4B266 with the BIOS when the onboard sound was active, only with the jumpers. Disable the sound--it works.

Well just to pop in here with word......

Asus P4B266 -- onboard sound and USB 2.0 enabled
P4 1.6A @ 2.4Ghz 1.6v -- using the new P4 Alpha/120mm Panaflo L1A with fan duct (she's quiet and cool)
(oh yeah its a Costa Rican chip as well)
-- the system has been as high as 160 but tends to get a little flakey for me so I keep it at 150 and am very happy/content with those results

I have had no issues with the onboard sound and like it quite a bit. I am probably going to stick with the onboard sound until the next wave of soundcards hits (whenever and whatever that may be) so long as its not made by CREATIVE!

***The only thing that ever caused me a problem was my generic PCI firewire card. I am currently leaving that out as it would not allow me to o/c at all. Other than that smooth sailing.
