When I bought something from Home Depot and I had them verify it was two cents cheaper at Lowe's, they did the "beat them by 10%" my way, so they matched it to Lowe's price, then subtrated 10% from it.

So I was prepared to buy something from Office Max after I verified it was about 40cents cheaper at Office Depot nearby.

When I got there, I was told they'll guarantee the difference by 115%. So, basically they were going to give me a discount of 115% of 40cents.

That's the same way Staples does it. Stop complaining, a lot of places don't even price match.

No, a parallel to be this would be someone who complains when the restaurant fails to show up with his dessert. :)

go for it, think of all the things you could do with that 6 cents! like shoving it down the store managers throat.

Is the free desert really worth the humiliation of having the waiters sing happy birthday?

Exactly my point... :)
I can only imagine the looks you get from the people around you when you say you want to pricematch something thats 2¢ cheaper.

Office Depot $69.54
Office Max $69.99

What I was expecting was Home Depot style. Who will match competitor's price and an additional 10%. I have done this before when they had 10% employees' friends appreciation day and used it along with 10% price match and saved quite a bit.

What I thought:
match to $69.54 then take away 15% to make the final price of $59.11

Instead, they wanted to do:

Difference=$0.45
it was something like these...
$69.99 - 1.15*0.45=$69.40
or $69.54 - 1.15*0.45=$69.03

I didn't need that toner cartridge right away, so I ordered online for $56 shipped.

I have no clue... So Home Depot must be an exception?

The 115% pricematch policy runs like this:

Office Depot product $10.00
OfficeMax product $11.00

Price match to $10 then you get 15% of the difference in price. So (15% of $1.00) 15 cents making it $9.85
