The likely scenario is that once the theif realized just how valuable it was (from the local news reporting it being stolen), he realized there would be no way he could sell it without tipping himself off, so he just ditched it in the trash.
 
well old violins usually look like crap. They aren't all shiny and blingy like the ones they make today. They're usually dull, and you can't really tell how nice it is. A rich friend of mine that was studying with the same teacher as me bought a $20,000 violin, and it basically fit the description above.

Maybe cellos are different, but sometimes the worse it looks, the better it is 😀
