Installing a heatsink while sleeping (sleepwalking) is never a good idea. You made an excellent decision by doing it in the morning.

Heat that high with functioning heatsink could also be overclocking. Go into the bios and make sure you are running at stock speeds. Also download everest which will report what speed your processor is running at. I had an issue once that turned out to be my cpu overclocking without me knowing. IF it is high set the bios to default and then change anything else you had different.
The Socket 754 version of the 3000+ runs at 2 Ghz
The Socket 939 version runs at 1.8Ghz
Also verify you are running the same voltage. These vary depending on the model number of the 3000+ which you can also get from everest.
The amd link is here

The link to get everest home edition sharware is here

Im actually not running an AMD 64, it's a Athlon XP 3000+. And according to my old desktop box it should be running at 2.16 GHz which is what everest reports. And since my current mobo was from my old hp computer, I don't even have the option of over/under clocking with this processor.
Anyway, after leaving my computer off overnight. The temp of the processor seems to have dropped dramatically. The highest its been at in the last 20 minutes is 59. It normally stays at about 55-56. Maybe this is the "break-in" that as5 was talking about? Not sure because my case temp seems to be the same. If the temp starts rising high for large periods of time I'll double-check the heatsink.

you will lower your temperature by 13 degrees if you get your case temperature down to 30C. 43C is a sure sign that your case just has no airflow. Asside from that, use the default hsf. MAKE SURE you read the instructions for it and know you are putting it on correctly.

I just spent the last hour and some cleaning all the dust out of my fans, trying up / tying down my wires and folding my ide cables. My case temps havent changed at all =/. I'm thinking about just investing in a new case as soon as my dad decides to actually let me spend my money --"
Oh btw mechBgon, I went ahead and redid the headsink again just to check. The side that was harder to put on was not the side it should be on, it would look like .. dont remember which one it was, but where the step was on the wrong side. Because how I said before both sides were stepped, the side needing more force was a smaller step and thus didnt work.

Before buying a new case, make sure you have your case fans installed correctly. By this, I mean make sure you have the proper ones sucking air in and the proper ones blowing air out. General rule of thumb is have one in the front sucking air in and one in the back (behind your CPU) blowing air out. If you don't have the air flowing generally in one direction (front-to-back) in your case and you don't have the same number of fans blowing in as you have blowing out, there could be a problem because of that. I've seen an improper setup due to 3 fans blowing in and only the power supply fan blowing out be fixed by flipping around a fan and that fix caused case temps to be 10c lower.

A really quick test you can do to see if this might be the case is to see what your CPU temps are if you run with the side of your case open and a normal people-cooling fan (like you would use on a hot day without air conditioning) blowing at your case.

perhaps a bigger heatsink would be better like one of those ones u got to bolt through the mobo coz they are so heavy and a big 92mm or 120 mm fan
