It has never happened to me but I was talking to a customer once and it happened to her. She had to call back later.

I was reading recently that this is becoming more of a problem because the high-speed drives rotate the media so fast, the least little imperfection in the CD's balance causes too much stress and it fractures. The article said higher speed CD drives are impractical now unless the speed improvements are achieved by using multiple heads (in which case it won't have to spin so fast).

on that note, how likely is it that the ink we use to write on CDRs could cause instability? Say you write a lot of stuff on the bottom half of the disc, would that cause wobbling in the drive? I dont wanna find out the hard way someday

Doh?

I hate it when that happens. :) Makes you feel good to have a warranty. Maybe they'll get you one of those Samsung drives instead.

Good luck!!

Maybe I should wear a hardhat after I install that 15K rpm HD I have coming my way.

Funny story I read once along those lines about a (I think it was IBM) lab technician who, along with one other was killed when a 20k RPM HDD (which had platters bigger than a laser disc) blew and sent the platters flying!

....what? It's a laser, not ink....and it writes in a circular pattern..you don't fill a CD bottom to top.

This same thing happened with my brother's new Poloroid 40x/12x/48x burner from the Officemax hotdeals thread.. ($20 after rebate)

He put the Baldur's Gate 2 cd in his drive (which has worked for the past few years just fine) and started the game and played it for a few hours.

Then, when I was trying to fix his network, the cd drive tray just ejected... I didn't think anything of it so I pushed it back in and the cd spun up.. A few minutes later, we all heard a really loud (gunshot loud) pop sound and we all thought it came from outside. After I fixed the network, my bro went back to play Baldur's Gate 2 and the game didn't start so he ejected the cd... It came out in about 1000 tiny pieces. I have to RMA the drive now.. dammit.

I think he was talking about writing on the CD with a marker or something.

But there are plenty of porduction CD's with images more on one side than the other, even some that are half-blank and half-inked. I wouldn't worry about it. Marker ink doesn't go nearly as thick as the stuff they print on CDs.

I have one of those, but there's a covering of material over the opening that would prevent anything from coming flying out. Least I friggin hope so.
