WOW... (java programming class rant)

first off, this class is full of first year students, in the cis:web design program, all with previous programming experience. basically the first couple of chapters are review.

in the teachers lecture today, he was explaining variables, there are still a few students that have absolutly NO programming backround. i can't remember what exactly he was using for a example, a variable like ANSWER and some numbers, then he went on to say "a variable can be anything! thats why it's called a variable, although it always comes first", answering someones question. a girl raises her hand, note, she is a third year student (at a two year school) and her previous experience is auto body.... her argument : "So if it was like 2 + 4 = 6 then 2 and 4 are the variables, because they come first, and they join together to make something?".... the teacher stood there for a second and then responded "WHAT?!"... her little schpiel (sp) went on for like 5 min before someone in the back of the class said "ENOUGH! A number isn't a vairable because it is a number, example, 3 is 3, it can't change"... then she turned around and responded "Well i'm not a mathmatician"...

my thoughts... wow :disgust:

seems like you go to a selective school.

NDSCS, tech school in wahpeton, ND... if you can write your name and tie your shoes they let you in 😛 most people that go to this school are going for the John Deere programs, but they are the only school in the state with a GOOD web design program... so here i am.

PICS??? 😉

you wouldn't want them even if i had some... i would probably get banned for posting something like that 😀

School on programming - yes. School on web DESIGN? - hmmmmmm... no matter how much theory they teach ya... if you got it, you got it... if you don't... well.. don't pay thousands to try and learn it. Just my general opinion.

well programing, as far as teaching the languages, php, java, things like that... i guess i stated what i wanted to say wrong.

Actually, I think it applies to both practices. You can learn to do program, and you can learn to create a design. Does it mean that either will be good? Of course not. Some people have an inherent ability to code, others will just barely get by. Some people have an inherent ability to design, but rarely can they actually do the code.

So, yes, you can learn "web design". It just doesn't guarantee that your designs will be any good...

All I'm saying is that paying thousands to learn design is not the way to go in my personal opinion. There are tons of sites like coolhomepages.com that you can LEARN from. Pick up ideas and experiment.

But if part of the curriculum is coding, then it's all good.
