No, headphones are for people who live in such a proximity to other individuals such as that would have issues with playing music or games while they are sleeping, working, studying, or other task in which the sensation of anything other than somewhat silent surroundings would inhibit.

That, and there's a roughly 5-10 to 1 ratio of sound quality at a given price with headphones vs. speakers. Money doesn't grow on trees (and that's a silly expression because if it did, it would be worthless).

I have logitech z540, and they suck compared to the JBL Studio Series S36II that I have hooked up to a nakamichi reciever. The JBL lack bass compared to the 540s (THey are bookshelfs afterall, I'm thinking about getting a Hsu or SVS sub to fix this) but, the JBL just blow the logitech out of the water in terms of clarity in the midrange and treble.

everyone in this thread was pimping their 'multimedia' klipschs. of course if you move up to a different price bracket you can do better. glad to see another fellow hd-580 owner, but mine broke few days ago. upgrading to hd-650 soon

Haha well then your headphone claims were quite accurate . I've actually considered selling mine because I like the 'fullness" of sound from large speakers, but they've been great for the last couple years.

Sweet spot is very limited. And... for home theater, you want relatively high SPL, and it doesn't help that there's a lot of bass in many movies.

They're great if a limited number of people are listening, and you have a discrete subwoofer to help them along. I think the membranes have an excursion of less than +/- 1mm. :Q

I like flat-panel speakers a lot myself--I have Apogee Divas in the listening room, Apogee Duettas in the converence room, and IRS Betas in my main editing room, but for just the reasons you mention, I don't use them in the theater. Except (obviously) for the Betas--I've never been happy combining a flat-panel speaker like one of the Apogees or a Magnepan with a subwoofer, and, for that matter, you'd need a lot of extra space to put together a 5.1 or 7.1 surround system with flat-panel speakers.
