Wow, I just lost a long-term hardcore game because I'm stupid.

I was about 90% finished, but I haven't played it in a while. I thought for sure this was going to be the first hardcore game I've ever completed. But I got careless.

Around 9 months down the drain.

What's the latest you've ever lost a hardcore game? Did you actually follow the "hardcore rule" (delete all saves immediately upon death)? I haven't done it yet, but I guess I should.
Continuing from this point on won't feel right knowing I died.

It's not a true hardcore game unless you destroy the hard drive the game was on and smash the game cd to pieces after you die. ;)

I don't really see the appeal in "hardcore single life" mode. I play to have fun, that doesn't really sound like fun. But I get there are those who like it.

Depends on how long the game is. A short game like FTL it doesn't bother me. If I was playing a game that took 40+ hours, it wouldn't be as fun losing.

I always feel like those are the people who can only afford a couple games a year and have lots of time to play so they want them extra difficult for them to last. I'm with you. I'd rather enjoy my time and buy a new one to finish.

. . . . game . . . . Around 9 months down the drain . . . .
This does not parse.

Since when is a game that was fun, time down the drain because *ANYTHING*? And if you played it that long without having fun... um, what?

I agree with you mostly..... But it could be dependent upon what you are looking for....

I NEVER wanted KOTOR 1 to end. NEVER.
XCOM Enemy unknown (the last one)
CANT WAIT FOR THE END..... Begging for it....
In fact, as per steam I have not touched it in a month and apparently I am pretty close.

To me, hardcore mode the END game is the prize.
You are not playing it to explore new worlds, or tactics... FINISH is the prize.

So I can see the OP point...

(WOW was that wishy washy enough for you????)

No. I don't do that shit because I'm not stupid. I'm sure I've beaten games without dying once but I just don't remember it.

There are definitely games where I went through half the thing without dying... and I was like, "Well, OK. Time to see how fast I can actually complete these levels. Run and gun the whole way! NO STOPPING EVEN FOR A SECOND!"

Sometimes you can make it through... but not often.

I'll do games like x-com no-reloads (even the original). Otherwise, I'll keep reloading till I have perfection. If a game has hardcore mode I usually play it on that too.

You're not familiar with the concept of a hardcore playthrough, are you? That's ok.

Unless you're a sadist you NEVER start a hardcore playthrough of a particular game until you've finished it multiple times. A hardcore playthrough is meant to add the spice of perma-death and lost hours of progress, making every encounter much more meaningful. It also alters your playing style to be more realistic. You don't just attack anything and re-load if you die, you have to avoid potentially lethal encounters until you're at least strong enough to get away.

I purposely play my hardcore playthroughs intermittently; it's easier for me to focus on playing that style for shorter periods of time without getting stupid. I have a hardcore game of Baldur's Gate on a laptop at my parent's house that I started probably 10 years ago and only play every couple of years anymore, but it's still fun when I do get back into it.

playing 99% of all games nowdays, hardcore is almost a (note, i did say almost, not all) requirement, regen health, regen shields, auto aim, button push draws a line on screen where you go, etc..

the reason somebody climbs a mountain, isnt because it cant be done, its because most people are so lazy they wont attempt it as it takes skill, planning, thought, its not easy. When your done YOU feel like you did something. No reason to tell anybody else, they wont get it. Hardcore mode in games is the same thing (expect with alot less physical demands and your not putting your life on the line).. you did something almost nobody will do because it takes skill and time.

I dont play much hardcore myslef, the TIME part is no longer a luxury i have when gaming.. SO i chose the game I play that way wisely..
Skyrim ( well most beth games)
Path of Exile
L4D2 (solo)

otherwise most my gaming is done on standard or one step down from Hardcore.

How is it "realistic" when you first play through the game numerous times so you know what encounters lie ahead? Wouldn't that be considered "cheating"? :p

There's definitely some give and take involved imo. I don't think it's possible to finish a longer game of even moderate difficulty on a hardcore first playthrough. You have to have some idea of what's coming, at least.

I can't imagine the frustration of carefully spending hours on a game the first time out and being one-shotted by something that you had no idea was coming. I've made it all the way to Atlantis on a hardcore run of Tomb Raider (never finished, I think my chances of ever finishing the last levels without dying are like one in a million), but I always sweated the T-Rex. Every time.

Maybe I should give it a try, though. What (good) games do you think are doable hardcore on a first attempt?

Lol "people climb mountains to prove they are better than you"

Personally i cant stand to be around ppl that have the need to prove anything.

Newsflash; it's a game, it would still be wasted even if you did finish. As much as all entertainment is a waste of time..

On a hardcore playthrough the only thing that counts is finishing the by any means possible.

You still haven't elaborated on what game it was, and how you died. :p

My friend had one of the UFC games for his PS3. Since it would autosave progress, whenever he would lose a career fight he'd run to the console and unplug it lol.

Naw, I'm not going to say what game it was. I don't feel like getting trolled about the game itself.

I will say it's in the RPG category and it's not a newer game. I died because for some idiotic, moronic, foolishly inane reason I felt compelled to clear out an area that I hadn't completely finished before heading to the end game, and I forgot about something that happens there.

Weird thread if you're not even going to talk about what game it was. Cool story bro I guess.
