I think i found the one i like... Tried it out over at a local photo shop and loved it... 🙂

That's the exact setup I have for my SLR, love it. Good choice picking a head with built in quick release. Forego the quick release and you'll be kicking yourself later. The only downside to the 3001 legs for me was the lack of quick-locks, you have to deal with the screw-down locks on each leg. If you step up to the 3011? I think, you get the quick-lock legs.

Ya know what i just realized though? If you have a ball head, how hard is it to do panoramics? When you unlock the ball, dosent it become fairly loose?

For the few (horizontal) panoramics shots I do, rotating the center column of the tripod around while keeping the ballhead locked suffices just fine.

If you want to do a lot of panoramic shots though, a pan/tilt head might be a thought. But keep in mind a pan/tilt head is usually larger (heavier) and more importantly, not as easy to quickly adjust. They also make ballheads that have pan-lock so you can just rotate the camera horizontally; not as versatile as a pan/tilt, but a good compromise (but more $$.)

on the topic of tripods, I've got this really old tripod my aunt used a while back that won't reach the full height it's supposed to (61") something on it is broke but i can still mount and lock my camera on it and it's okay to use just to get by with. i've been looking around for a new tripod but I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on one. how does this look for a cheap one?

I'm not really big into photography yet, I just got a Canon A75 about a week ago and am still learning the basics. Would I be better off buying this one or dropping a hundred dollars for the nice Bogen / Manfrotto one mentioned earlier in the thread (this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control...uctlist&A=details&Q=&sku=283689&is=REG ). I'd love to have a nice tripod but I'm not sure if I'm ready to spend that much for one. Is it something that down the line, as I get more into photography, will consider a necessity?

Yah, looks like that would be the 488RC2 which runs about $30 more than the 486RC2. I think i may get that one because i LOVE panoramics, but want the simplicity of a ballhead
